First all prospective pilots need to remember...
1. A moving dropship is harder to hit never sit completely still unless a gunner REALLY REALLY REALLY needs it.
2. Dodge and weave, Dodge and weave, Rinse Rinse again then repeat endlessly!
3. Refer to 1. follow with 2.
Now onto the guide portion of our feature.
1. You need to be moving to gain or lose altitude L1 to rise and L2 to drop this is the part that most new pilots don't figure out and get frustrated with in my experience. (Took me 5 dropships to figure that one out.)
2. Gunners you need them unless your a really amazing pilot.
3. Dropship crushing is actually alot harder than most people think smashing some poor fool in the large open area's is easy that pilot that flattened you on top of the buildings by Objective C is actually a pretty good pilot or really lucky.
4. Voice chat with your gunners helps ALOT remember to go into the settings and turn it ON it's off by default. Note (Even with the current chat bugs where the opposing team ends up in your chat a pilot that only refers to targets by ship facing and gunner who will have a target line can do alot to save a battle.)
5. Get to know your environment smashing your dropship into that crane by C or the guns by A when your trying to come in fast will destroy your dropship killing you and your gunners.
6. Always be aware of vehicles and heavies on the field they can seriously mess up your dropship. Snipers CAN and will take out your gunners (I personally have shot about 8gunners out of dropships at the time of this because the pilot went slow or stopped to long)
Piloting your first dropship can be confusing for alot of FPS players your having to move in 3 dimensions instead of just 2 while still managing to track targets above and below you. Since you don't actually have guns of your own to use the tendency to try to face right at a target makes it harder for your gunners to shoot it down.

1. If you're worried about small arms fire, you need to learn to build your ship better.
2. Your gunners will never hit anything with this mindset, sometimes you need to hover close to the ground while waiting for a hack to finish, it's called being an objective oriented team player.
Now on to the rest of your guide.
1. You do NOT need to be moving to gain altitude, the PS3 buttons are pressure sensitive, press L1 all the way in and your ship will rise, quickly, the same goes for descending and L2.
2. Correct, but in the current build you should have missile turrets, but if you're bobbing and weaving constantly, they'll have a really hard time defending the objectives you're taking.
3. Once you learn to use your Dualshock 3 buttons properly, it's pretty easy.
4. I agree with this 100%
5. Also true, but again, damage reduction works wonders, so does throttle control. Nothing beats situational awareness like you said though.
6. 100% truth.
Just my opinion though...

TIPS:
When engaging HAVs (Tanks), itGÇÖs best to fly directly over them due to the fact Tanks cannot shoot straight up. DonGÇÖt worry your gunner(s) can shoot almost straight down. Use your right analog stick to adjust your camera view to see what is below you. This is also a great tactic if you want to be a squishy pilot (Squish Clones by landing on them)
