I am trying to think of a way to use 1 headset to: Record from the PC using the mic for commentary and use the speakers in the headset for the PS3.
Will this work? |

I doubt it. The headset will most likely just go to the PS3. You'd probably need a USB to audio jack instead of USB to USB for the comp. |

Not sure what you are trying to do, but whats in the picture will not work at best, at worst it will damage something. |

I am basically trying to have it connected to the PS3 and the computer at the same time. |

easiest way would be with a audio to USB dongle. Then a "standard" headset. Get a splitter (Y adapter) for the audio on the headset, plug one end into the USB dongle and the other into the PC audio in. Then the USB dongle plugs into the PS3 |

there is a turtlebeach headset with audio line out jack.
otherwise you would have to change your ps3 to output chat from your tv speakers, capture that normally and then in a seperate program record your voice with a boom mic, then in post production combine them the best way you can with the timestamps, almost creating a voice over or narration.

Take a standard headset, the kind with a audio in and mic out plugs(I think there 8mm or 6mm audio plugs). Then take a Y adapter(It splits an audio signal) and a audio to usb dongle(this converts the audio to usb for the PS3). Use the Y adapter to split the mic audio and run one to the PS3, the other signal to the PC audio in or record plug. |

Ok, but, how would you do it for a headset that has a wireless dongle for it's only output (Playstation Wireless Stereo Heaset)? Actually, I think the new one that comes out October has a headphone jack built in...would this work? |

I just gave you the easiest way, it can be done with the Bluetooth headset. Its just a lot harder and you need the right PC hardware and software. Plus you will still need an audio to USB dongle.
The audio will need to go from the headset to the PC then from the PC to the PS3. The PC has to have software that records the audio and then forwards it out through the PCs sound card. Then the audio to USB dongle converts it so the PS3 can use the audio. |

I already said I am not even going to do this. It's just for future reference...and if I did decide to record gameplay of a game then I wouldn't break the NDA of this awesome game. |

I'm not sure what kind of software would do this, I'm pretty sure it exist tho. And as the GM so gently reminded use, no NDA breaches please
Try googling it, I'm sure something will pop up with some time and research.

I was jocking (and looking for a website for you <3 ). I used some of those http://www.hauppauge.com/ and they are pretty nice and with an awesome quality. Probably there are cheaper solutions around, but I am not really used to that kind of stuff, sorry. |

DERN IT...I said I'm not gonna break the NDA...anyway, I am searching it on google now. Okay, all I found was somethin' about putting cassette tapes on the computer... EDIT: I might have maybe-ish found it (not the software): http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/parts-and-accessories/ps3-pc-adapter-cable.aspx It doesn't show them connected at the same time though. |

You could do this in 1 of 2 ways......
1.
Get a Multipoint Bluetooth Headset that supports Audio out to 2 devices simultaneously (most only support audio out / in to 1 device at a time even though is is actively paired with 2). You would then have to find a way to mute yourself on the PS3 so that your comentary wouldn't interupt the current game.
The better method (IMO)
2.
Get a heaset with 2 output jacks (1 for mic, 1 for headphones). Then get a USB mic/audio adapter with a mute button**. Something similar to this: http://goo.gl/5KxWI (this one has a mute button on it). You can then:
A. Plug your headphones into the Audio jack on the PS3 and the Mic to your PC. Set the audio on the PS3 to go out to headphones. This will have the VC come through the headphones and you don't have to worry about your VC in-game cause your Mic is not plugged into the PS3. Though this means while you can hear, you cannot actively participate in VC.
OR
B. Plug your headphones into the Audio jack on the PS3. Get a Y splitter for the Mic. Something similar to this: http://goo.gl/HmpE1 You then plug one end into your computer and the other into the USB adapter on your PS3. You can then use the USB adapter on the PS3 to mute, while still being able to commentate on your PC and not interupt gameplay.
While you will be limited by a cord, it will work for your purposes.
**Please note the usb adapter MUST be "Plug and Play." If it requires drivers it will 100% NOT work on the PS3. |

let me see if i can make this simple....
plug your mic, i assume that its got two 3.5mm plugs, one for mic and one for headset.
plug the mic in your PC and then plug your ps3 into your headset. you can do this via the ps3 multi audio out using the default RCA cables.

I recalled something from a Game Informer about a year back. You can use something along the lines of this: IS To record the video and audio straight from the PS3. Then you can either record without a mic and do a voiceover (which is what most people do on commentaries), reducing the sound from the PS3 and enhancing your voiceover sound. The other option is live commentary which takes a bit of skill at commentating, but you can just use everything at one time. The above device uses USB 3.0.
So its basically Live commentary vs. Voiceover commentary. Live commentary is easier, but requires more commentary skill. Voiceover commentary takes more time, but you can edit the commentary as much as you want. Basically, just find a device like the one above, which will probably help A LOT.
Edit: keep in mind, the PS3 Headset by Sony is incompatible with Windows unless you have the drivers, which is a bit more extra work. |
