According to the specs it's inferior to the advanced railgun. Is there some advantage that it has over the cheaper version? |

Sometimes the best gear isn't the best stat, but maybe best stat per fitting requirement.
I haven't studied the large railgun, but do know there are other modules that the "proto" level gear isn't what is expected. |

I have the prototype large railgun and it is totally worth it if you want to have a max DPS railgun tank for taking out MCC or structures. with all the multiplying bonuses on the tank and the modules you fit, you end up getting a huge DPS increase with it. |

The way I understand it, although the proto large railgun has less dps listed than the cheaper advanced one, this is just a mistake in the 'show info' window and the actual combat dps of the prototype version IS greater than that of the advanced one.
The same problem occurs in the Large Missile Launcher where all 3 variants display exactly the same stats. I have skilled for the advanced missile turret and tried it, though only a few times as I could see a noticeable difference before the, seemingly now inevitable, onslaught of the entire opposition bringing out proto swarms n forges and me spending the rest of the match trying to keep my 300k isk Surya alive :-( lol. Bring it on I say, I've skilled a proto swarm with nano of my own, bit more hard work than a forge gun but the satisfaction when a HAV goes pop :-) I totally understand why they come after mine so hard and fast.
Any DEV or GM confirmation of the effectiveness of these large turrets would be much appreciated by many :-) especially with the quantity and quality of AV fittings there are being fielded at the moment. |

A pure DPS fit tank (Marauder) is a moster for anything in its sights. No doubt about that, and if you want that, the Proto guns are the way to go.
There is a "BUT" in there though.
If you for DPS, you must make sure you have infantry and/or another tank backing you up, your armour and shields are paper thin.
In fact, all tanks should ally themselves with a Swarm launcher in one of the gunner seats anyway, to take down attacking Dropships, which are easily out of range for the tank. |
