It's no secret that flying machines like planes, helicopters, high-altitude hovercrafts etc' have a plethora of data pouring into the pilots brain. While I don't think there is room in Dust currently for all this data I do belive some of it will actually be useful. Even a simplified pilot needs at least basic information about his craft.
What I believe is missing ATM are the following:
- Altitude readout
- Vertical speed readout (the rate at which the craft is climbing or dropping)
- Movement speed (not the horizontal rate but rather the speed of the vector facing directly forward from the craft's nose)
I think that covers the basic missing data a pilot needs. Any more ideas anyone? |

I don't object to it in principle, especially if the visual design was a positive addition in cockpit view where this kind of information could be valuable, but in the default TP view I don't see how this adds either visually or in gameplay terms. I can see my height and speed relative to the environment so I don't need visual aids or extraneous HUD elements. |

i not sure about your thoughts Chihrio, this could be useful if you wanted to know your exact speed and barings not just your own roundabout guess. |

Sure, that might be useful in very large areas where there was the potential to lose your bearings, but for flying vehicles the maps are pretty small and the flight ceiling is also very low. I can't see any situation where you would need or it would be practically useful to know this information. If you want it, all power to you, but I don't see how it fits and I can list a dozen other things that are needed far more than this - can't you?

While I do agree this is more important in a cockpit view than the TP view, I think it would be useful to both. I'll give you an example from the US Navy Seals training. They have a few maneuvers that involve a thing called Halo Jumps (I might have my term slightly wrong. Don't shoot me). This is basically jumping out of the back of a low flying vehicle into water. For this to work the pilot HAS TO be an exact altitude or the Seals will probably die.
I can think of many other real usages a pilot would have for his speed or altitude. It's just a part of being a pilot. Same as a tank driver knows where his turret is located relative to the tank body. |

I'm sure Seals would kill for an inertia dampener.
The question is, is there anything in or likely to be in Dust that makes this kind of information necessary? |

I believe it's essential. Let's say the enemy has long range sensors (let's call them radar). Let's also say these sensors only cover anything more than 20 meters from the ground. If anyone is ever to be able to fly a covert squad in undetected, accurate altitude readings are a must.
Another example would be being able to hover accurately at the perfect height above ground for the dropship to not enter "deployment mode". This would also allow it to continue to function as a spawn point even when it's close to the ground without worrying it'll get too close and the spawn point will go away.
I can think of a lot more examples. It's just one of those things you have as a pilot and use for practically everything. |
