I'm still struggling to figure out the best way to fight with the mass driver.
My optimal encounter would be starting behind a friendly heavy or a couple of assaults. I jog behind and assess the enemy situation as we close distance.
I will often pause to lob several grenades into the enemy position or sprint to flank while breaking line of sight.
What have you learned about getting the grenade to explode on impact?
I'm trying to decide if I can explode the round off of a vertical surface (wall) behind the enemy or if it has to strike the ground at a particular angle.
Or it could be just a bug filled weapon. Not sure.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance |

I've tried to use it but I can't seem to find a good use for it. Pretty much every time I find myself engaging targets I'm struggling to get the round to hit near where the enemy will be in the next second or two as the round travels. Anticipating the arc at distances is tough, plus the blast is fairly small so you need to be accurate. I've wasted several magazines trying to hit ONE guy, where I'm at the wall on the western side of Point A, firing at guys fighting around the wall by Point B's spawn.
Right now I don't see mass drivers as being useful. They're very hard to use and you need to hit several times at least to get a kill. The only time I've ever thought they were okay is what I was on the pipes above Point B, shooting down on enemies. Hitting guys with the mass driver when they're below you and fairly close to you is much easier, and maybe even more reliable than aiming with an assault rifle.
So I'd recommend either shelving it or trying to engage enemies when they're below you. If you try to fight when you're on the same elevation, roughly, as the target, you're struggle to get hits. Hitting guys above you is even worse. But, shooting down at guys? You'll get kills. |

As a suport I'm a fan of it once you get the skill points in to it you start having teeth and as a support there a good chance that your going to have a nanohive for ammo. I'm at level 4 skill and a direct hit by the round will kill every dropsuit other then maybe a heavy. The gun really shines if you have high ground or targets are next to walls. You can also skill up to have the aoe on them bigger.
The problem is it seems like the gun will sometimes fire a dud round, which we have brought up a few times in other threads. |

leading your target with a trajectory weapon takes some getting used to. to me the mass driver does not seem to have that long a range unless fired from a higher elevation, but maybe thats just me - for reference my fps series was the tribes series, and i played heavy with the handheald mortar a lot, so im used to putting launched trajectory projectiles on target. am skilling it up and have a damage mod ule for it on one build, and its rewarded me some. still, the dud round issue...yeah. |

I recently did a large volume of testing relating to explosive projectiles that can be found in this thread. I would appreciate your feedback on your use of the Mass Driver's explosive projectiles there as well. |

Played every day of this build and I think i have only been killed by a mass driver once. I did try that gun out early on in the build but I found it hard to aim or kill anything with it. It probably has its uses though, ive just never seen it as a threat to myself personaly. Probably quite good firing from above to targets on the ground though. But might as well just use a forge gun. |

I used to use a prototype Mass Driver with the proficiency to Lvl.5, but after the shots started disappearing, I decided to go for Forge instead. I recommend aiming higher than you would, and aiming at peoples feet when in a 1 on 1. |

i used this weapon quite a bit as it was new to this build totally agree with the guy ive quoted ive had alot of direct hits with this weapon when on the same elevation but and to no avail no dmg shown on the enemy and i decided whats the point using the weapon if a direct hit doesnt do any dmg as someone else posted had a lot of practise with indirect fire weapons dont know why but the hit detection and splash radius seams to me to be far more effective with hight advantage with this weapon |

i made a suggetion with a range finder/tracer like thing in this thread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=28041&find=unread that shows you where the shot is going to land, if you give a CPU and a module slot for it. |

Hit detection for the Mass Driver feels like it's off, particularly against vehicles & structures. What I've mostly used mine for is a rapid fire shotgun with slightly increased range. As long as you hit your opponent directly they'll be hurting. |

It seems when you're at ground level that most other weapons are better suited for it, and when you're really high, an ideal artillery position, it seems they time out before landing. Hopefully they're a work on progress, as I'd like to use them. |

Hit detection in general is off.
Detonation on any explosive but REs is even further off.
Mass Drivers are worse than grenades.
I've watched a Mass Driver round land in front of where I'm going and not explode, stopped just in case, then moved forward about 5 seconds later and been blown up by the shot that had been fired earlier (and it wasn't another shot, because the guy who fired it was dead). |

The best strategy I found for the mass driver is to be on high ground always. If not aim a little higher an lead the opponent. Once in a while you'll get a direct hit and the fight will be over. Though direct hits happen more often in "shotgun" ranges and for some reason if you're too close it will damage you also.
Also if anyone noticed, if you fire a massdriver straight up, it will not fall down......ever. The arc is pretty much none existant once you get sharpshooter lv 5.
EDIT: you can tell if you're hitting someone directly when you hear a small ripping sound when you hit the person :P |

Great advice here and thank you all for a very constructive thread.
I've stopped my mass driver work at Proficiency I and I will consider further practice at a later time.

I like the mass driver, however I completely suck at using it. It has no real advantage other than watching ppl fly when they die. I think it was suppost to be a inbetween weapon for killing infantry and vehicles. Not excelling at either one, but can do it. It can dish out a little bit more dmg than a normal gun against vehicles, cru's and turrents, and will kick up a nice cloud of dust when trying to hit infantry. I don't really understand why ppl are afraid to get close when a person is using a mass driver because the thing is so hard to use, that it is a rare instance when you find someone with good enough aim to make a difference, so the suppression thing doesn't exactly work. Even at a bottleneck point. You could probably run right through his shots and not get hit. It will just kick up some dust and make it hard to see.
However, one thing can be said about it. If you are one of the skilled ppl that can aim a mass driver, then I'd imagine that this gun rocks because the only difference between the basic and best mass driver is 0.6 meter explosion radius. Thats not much, so you can pick up the basic one for hella cheap and use it like its the best one because you own skill can acount for 0.6 meters. I have 5/5 for this gun and have used the freedom model and didn't see much difference between it an the basic. So I strap the basic model to a really cheap scout suit fit that I can afford to buy in the 1000's and go nuts on the battlefeild because I dont care if I die or not. 20, 30 deaths, ahh it doesn't matter because that fit is dirt cheap and I'm still having fun watching ppl fly. And I get a special thrill out of killing ppl with a mass driver because that kill probably took a decent amount of skill or I was just really lucky
For me, this gun is just something fun to play with when I'm grinding sp or trying to save isk. Am I ever going to be a hero and save a capture point from 3 or more guys like I do in my heavy suit... Probably not... but it sure will be fun trying
