So, while CCP has not announced any definitive plans for 0.0 as of yet, and lowsec is still quite tentative in it's plans, I had some thoughts on nullsec and DUST. I'm sure the devs, CSM, and everyone and their mother has had idea about the various tie ins, but I had some ideas that were bumping around in the back of my head for a while.
For anyone not familiar with EVE's Sovereignty mechanics, here is an overview.
Caveats to these ideas are as follows. Nothing set in stone has been said about the following: the relationship between player owned customs offices and DUST player owned ground installations, planets roles in Sov mechanics, what exactly are the changes, if any, are coming to Sovereignty.
There has been a lot of interest in DUST combat aboard stations. I see DUST mercs as a very viable option in a corp or alliances tactics in SOV warfare. Whatever future roles for planets in Sovereignty not withstanding, Stations (outposts) are an important piece of capturing a system right now.
When a system is SBU'd and the various pieces of Sov hardware become vulnerable, I see mercs as possible force multipliers in a couple ways.
One is that DUST matches could help influence the reinforcement timers to aid a corp or alliance to place a timer into a more beneficial time zone's prime time (Euro, Russian, US etc.)
Another way would be to have the outcome of the match rep or damage a station.
The last would be to have the matches effect the stations services.
Station services are always bash-able/rep-able even if a station is invulnerable or reinforced anyways and nor being able to repair or update your clone can be a serious hamper in someone's warfighting ability. A different map could be available for each type of service. Small claustrophobic corridor maps with a decidedly medical theme to them or a clone services map vs a giant multilevel hanger scene with 747 sized frigates in it for repair services.
This could also act as possible punishment or possibly delicious tear harvesting bait when SBUing your own system.
Also, if and when destructible outposts come into being, as has been discussed, merc fights could determine if the station is blow up or if it is captured. Winner gets the choice. This could allow an alliance who is loosing SOV to deny the winner's taking the station intact (scorched earth). Nothing quite like blowing up 20 or 30 billion Isk worth of outpost. Imagine beign the DUST merc to push the button on that. Kinda adds some teeth to the" light the universe on fire" tag in that one trailer.
Also, none of the combat would ever take place in the GÇ£habitatGÇ¥ areas of the station, as per the previous stated intent by the devs for no combat in those areas. This would be DUST only areas. . The utility corridors of the mall as opposed to the food court if you will. EVE stations are really fricking huge anyways according to the in game data. . .
Also, one pet peeve. I want to be able to set up a DUST contract to take ownership of abandoned and unfueled POSes that seem to clutter up every piece of lunar real estate in lowsec. F-king disgusting and I hate having to burn sec status to blast the stupid things. Can't be bothered to grind sec status back up. . . I should be able to send in mercs to capture it in some sort of match and either take it over or unanchor it and sell it off. . . |

Honestly the more ways they can incorporate Dust, and the more environs to fight in and over, the better.
But yeah, making the thrust of Dust efforts be a damaging/disabling thing rather than outright destruction is probably the way to go. Having Dust augment EVE gameplay, rather than circumvent it, sounds like the more sensible option. |

I think it would be interesting to impose a capturing mechanic to all sov and starbase structures using Dust mercs. What I would like to see is a system being assaulted, the SBU being up and the assaulting force hammering hard on the TCU. All the while the Dust mercs are in the hold of a Crane or similar transport ship watching the battle from the ship and being sent into the TCU when its shields are down to capture it.
This would let the assaulting force instantly online and swap sov (if the mercs were successful) because the anchoring and on-lining would already be taken care of, all that would remain is the fleet keeping the hostiles off the TCU long enough for the mercs to take control of it for whoever hired them.
Obviously its just a rough idea but I think fighting in orbital stations, TCUs and even POSes would be awesome. |
