So apparently I suck at this game.
Granted, I've only been playing for a few days, but I think I'm past the point where I can just chalk it up to being unfamiliar with the maps/other game mechanics.
At first I was totally willing to jump on the "durr all the older playerz are overpowerd" bandwagon, but I've been earnestly trying to analyze the situation and it seems like I'm the weakest link.
As an example, every time I get into a close quarters gunfight, I (apparently) end up just spraying bullets everywhere because my opponent barely seems to take any damage before I inevitably die. This has happened where the other guy is using a militia assault rifle and still kills me, so it's not (always) because of superior equipment.
In fact, aiming seems to be a huge problem for me; I'll be running across the battlefield and someone will snipe or rocket launcher(or whatever the hell it's called in DUST 514) me from across the map in one shot. By comparison, if I try the same tactic I can never seem to hit anybody even after 5 or 6 attempts.
Even when I'm lucky enough to stumble on someone without them seeing me, 50% of the time THEY end up killing ME instead.
I don't even know what skills to pursue because no playstyle seems to work for me. I suppose I haven't really tried using vehicles much, but I'm really fed up with how everyone's spamming them and feel like if I have to resort to the same tactics it reflects poorly on both me and the game; on me because apparently I'm not smart enough to figure out how to counter these tactics, and on the game for being poorly designed/unbalanced.
Of course, because I'm doing so poorly in each match, I rarely manage to accrue more than about 20-30k SP, so even if I try to pretend that skilling(and better equipment) will somehow magically fix everything, I still have to drudge through matches feeling like **** (even or maybe especially in the ones I win, because it feels like I'm just dead weight)
tl;dr - Feeling overwhelmed because I seem to suck at this game, is there something I can do to improve or should I just quit playing? :( |

turn your sensitivity down on the controller if it is really high, and dont try to zoom in a gunfight if they are within 25-30 meters. i would also work on getting a better assault rifle, makes a significant change. also lead your target, never stand still ever, even hacking an objective, keep moving a little bit it throws off the already borked hit detection.
my upgrade path was weapon->armor->suit->misc upgrades |

Watch your died rate a little closer, if you are looking to up your KDR, fit a militia scout with a militia swarmer and kill fliers - good ISK, decent SP.
Carry nanohives. The 1st time your militia nano-hive resupplies the proto heavy with his proto forge gun so he can keep dropping vehicles, you just contributed a lot more than you spent.
Carry drop uplinks, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE for a team to have too many well placed spawn sites
Gun in someone else's vehicle for some (nearly) free kills
and most important of all
ROLL WITH YOUR SQUAD. Don't go running into a battlefield alone unless you are trying to die so you can swap suits. |

First order of things is to enable comms even if you don't have a mic, second is to make sure you have adjusted the sensitivity to your liking; if your "shrooms" on your controller are stiff you get better results with low sensitivity if they are limb you should have higher sensitivity, this is true especially with sniper rifles where you have to get the dot moving just a little ...
The rest are about learning to shoot ie. not to panic in a fire fight and that takes a lot of practise mind you, your fittings also play part in the equation, not just the weapon but what else you have fittted in your suit.

The free vehicles are only in the game at the moment so ccp can test them. I imagine that next build you will have to start paying for them again which will drop the number in the game.
As far as advice, you need to train some gunnery skills for the weapons that you are using. One reduces the spray of your AR and another increases your range and another your damage. I played EVE for a long time so I understand how the skills work in Dust. Basically there will be basic skills and advanced ones which effect all of your modules. Doesn't matter if your talking about a shield extender armor repairer or your dropsuit, there will be skills that make them more effective.
The guy with the militia gear who killed you probably had a few skills trained up so he had better shields, armor and weapons even though they were all militia gear.
Don't quit playing, Get on coms and ask questions before the match starts and after it is over. Find someone to follow around to learn the maps and give assists in killing and hacking objectives. Give it a little time and you will come to the realization that this is an awesome game with huge potential when they have added all the content they are talking about.
Also remember that this is a closed beta testing and not a finished product so there will be glitches and balancing ongoing. |

Wow thanks for the quick, constructive replies guys
With look sensitivity, I've already mucked about with that a little and it barely seems to make a difference no matter how much I adjust it. I feel like it tends to be oversensitive so I've decreased it to like 5-10(default is around...30-40, something like that I think?) Of course, that's somewhat of a double edged sword because when you lower it that much it's difficult to turn quickly when somebody's ambushing you or whatnot. It also /never/ seems fine enough no matter how low I set it when I'm trying to shoot at range; it'd be interesting if they could come up with a system to dynamically adjust the sensitivity based on the situation, although I could also see some people calling that dumbing down the gameplay.
I've actually been very apprehensive about improving "specialty" skills like nanohives and drop uplinks because I've been punished in other games/MMOs for not sticking exclusively to one skilltree/whatever and I started out as an enforcer. I also didn't even know you couldn't use uplinks without learning a skill until recently(what is the basic logistic fitting even for if they don't give you that?)
I don't know if I've just been unlucky but in most matches I've been in most people don't seem to be using mics, and if they are they're just kind of casually talking among themselves and don't really seem to be engaged or forming strategies. I don't have a mic myself, but I don't think not having one should be game-breaking; there should be other ways to communicate as well. I dunno, this area is something I'm kind of ambivalent about.
Actually, if I could editorialize for a bit, it seems to me like it would benefit the game greatly to have more planning before the battle itself; such as contracting specific mercs known for having certain role specialties, formulating tactics based on a map that's known in advance, and forming squads based on those specialties to carry out certain maneuvers. If this has all already been discussed by CCP already in some form(sorry, I was planning to get up to speed on all that stuff a little later), then that's awesome and would definitely give me good reason to stay on. |

well part of the problem was that million SP/ISK bonus we all got last weekend. So many people are running around with protoguns and high level vehicles makes you newbs very very vulnerable
mainly the isk. Makes people more willing to run the high end gear. |

I've put points into various areas but it doesn't impact on my abilities on the field. Just don't spread yourself too thinly - pick a few weapons/roles/pieces of equipment you fancy and build them up gradually. Most things you can use from Level 1 skill, so try things out cheaply then specialise when you get a feel for what you like.

That will all be part of the game, depending on what level you play to and if you join a corp or not.
