So in this thread we propose ideas that would make good tutorials for the game. There are a great many threads from new players saying that the game is pretty complicated, so to avoid dumbing it down for the 12-year old CoD knife-wielding maniac, let's bring them up to snuff with what's going on.
Fitting tutorial - I would think this be a mandatory tutorial that the player must go through on their first sign-in.
Give the player a walk-through on fitting dropsuits, then guide them into making a Militia setup (most likely the Assault, since it seems to be the most general-purpose suit we have), or make them set up all four of their militia setups to walk them through a vast majority of the modules and what they do.
"Now, go the the marketplace and purchase a Militia Assault rifle."
*Buys the Assault Rifle*
"Good. The Assault Rifle is a common weapon that works best in close to mid-range engagements. Now, equip the Militia Assault Rifle into the 'L', or 'Light' weapons slot on your Assault Suit."
*Equips the Assault Rifle*
"Now that you have equipped your Assault Rifle, you'll notice that the two numbers on the bottom-left and the bottom-right have changed. To your left is your suits available CPU power, and to the right is your suits Powergrid output. These two numbers determine what you can and cannot use. Later in your game, you'll find many other combinations that work well, and you should feel free to try out anything that you can come up with to improve your combat effectiveness or assist your teammates with their objectives. As long as your modules do not exceed your suits capabilities, you can equip just about everything!"
"Your dropsuit is now able to combat enemies, but it could do with some toughening up. Let's go back to the marketplace and purchase some Armor Plating".
You see where this is going. Make players assemble their militia setups and get a general feel for what all of these funny pictures do that surround my suit.
EDIT; Controls Tutorial.
This tutorial would immediately follow the fitting tutorial and get the user acquainted with the game. I've read that you'll be adding PvE AI into this game, so this idea would work out perfectly when you implement that.
Basically, throw the player into a virtual training environment. For lore sake, we'll call it "Mental Conditioning", to give the new concious basic training so that it can start to bring itself up to par with the other ones that have died thousands of times only to come back to life and garb another gun.
Basically it's a training course that makes the user try out many different weapons, call in vehicles, experience dying, and let them fight some training dummies so they can get a bit of gungame going. Grenades, AV, sniping, vehicle driving, all that fun stuff. Make them capture an objective, hack a vehicle and joyride around in it. Let them experience some of what the game has to offer so they have a general idea for what they want to skill for. |

I like the idea, and they could have the lady that does the announcements in the war room to do a voiced tutorial. |

Maybe some interactive tutorial? AmericasArmy style.
You have fireing tut that comes with obstacle/movement course. Fitting tut where you make your fit and see how it is responding to movement/dmg Use of modules, different basic weapons. Vehicles piloting.
Of course in the way that every race do :) Minimatar - heavy military course, Gallente - high tech, Caldari - pure combat, Amarr - .... they just pray :D (Sorry if I massed up something with the races).
I think that after such tut I would be able to decide who I wanna to be on the battlefield. And also it's playground for all CCP humor like: " So you have chosen Command Dropsuit....well...maybe another day...if you survive" |

I haven't played America's Army, but from what I'm reading, it seems like you've got the idea. Give them a taste of various combat styles and inform players of the ideal role each of these suits fit.
Also, for the races -
Gallente - "Just wait until I get close..." Caldari - "Can't touch this" Amarr - "God says I'm better than you" Minmatar - ... I think the best description of these guys I've ever read was "like flying down a set of stairs firing off a pair of uzi's". |

If it's a bad idea, just say so. Better than floating in forum limbo for the past few days. |

i think this is an absolutely outstanding idea, and i have no doubt it'll make it into the release copy. would love to see it sooner, but i suppose it depends on their development and programming priorities. |

Yes, these are all great ideas. To incorporate them all we need our own, "AURA", like the EVE pilots gets.
In case you do not know, "AURA" is kinda like the EVE's Pilots personal A.I. That helps them with tutorials, ship docking, and undocking, etc. She is pretty much an iconic figure in the EVE universe. This is the link to her sigifnance in the EVE universe. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Aura
We need our own, "AURA". I agree it should be voiced by the lady that talks in the WarBarge before battle. I'm open to suggestions for names? |

This would be a great option for new players, but making it mandatory would annoy the hell out of me. |

It would only be mandatory on your first log-in, and the only reason I suggest it be mandatory is because people are going to download this game thinking it's going to be another CoD or Halo clone, and are going to get angered pretty quickly when people keep mowing them down with their own fits.
Show the new players that this game is much more in-depth than CoD or Halo or BF3 or what have you so that they can have a fighting chance. |

As long as we have the ability to redo the tutorial. Well, OK, not the theory section, but the practical bit.
Basically, we need somewhere to test out our new fits. Give us some target drones and scenarios to work through.
Additionally, that would give those of us who use Move a chance to tweak our settings. At the moment, I have to make changes then go into a match to find out what difference it makes. I don't want to be screwing up my team's chances just because I've changed my deadzone settings. |

Why not do it Medal of Honor Allied Assault where you a assault course to go through and a firing range where you had to hit targets. Youtube video of it. |

great ideas, OP thanks for going into such detail with your example for the tutorial text.
I can't imagine CCP officially launches DUST without enhanced tutorials and new player missions. |

agree tutorials are a must for Dust to have staying power.
Here is my two cents for a proposal as to how new players should enter Dust 514 for the first time:
1) Player watches an intro video that gives overall background on New Edan and then goes into some details about the different races.
2) Player chooses Race.
3) Player reads/watches video about bloodlines.
4) Player chooses bloodlines.
5) Player watches video about different roles and then enters simulation to "try out" the different role options.
6) Player chooses role.
7) Player enters tutorial on Fitting & Market. 7.1 Player purchases militia gear. 7.2 Player creates a militia load out for each militia drop suit (this becomes the players default suits when in game). 7.3 [optional] Player creates a fitting which their upgraded drop suit (will vary depending on which role was chosen ).
8) Play watches video which gives an overview of how game is played (below in no particular order). 8.1 Skirmish & Ambush explained. 8.2 Vehicles explained (calling in and fitting). 8.3 War Barge. 8.4 NPC's / Corporations / Contracts. 8.5 Skill Points / ISK / AUR. 8.6 Overall premise of New Edan and how Dust 514 interacts with EVE Online. 8.7 Battle Finder. 8.8 Other Lore and who they are (Mercenary/immortal soldier) and any other pertinent information.
9 Player learns about Merc quarters and enters into New Edan...
