So in this thread we propose ideas that would make good tutorials for the game. There are a great many threads from new players saying that the game is pretty complicated, so to avoid dumbing it down for the 12-year old CoD knife-wielding maniac, let's bring them up to snuff with what's going on.
Fitting tutorial - I would think this be a mandatory tutorial that the player must go through on their first sign-in.
Give the player a walk-through on fitting dropsuits, then guide them into making a Militia setup (most likely the Assault, since it seems to be the most general-purpose suit we have), or make them set up all four of their militia setups to walk them through a vast majority of the modules and what they do.
"Now, go the the marketplace and purchase a Militia Assault rifle."
*Buys the Assault Rifle*
"Good. The Assault Rifle is a common weapon that works best in close to mid-range engagements. Now, equip the Militia Assault Rifle into the 'L', or 'Light' weapons slot on your Assault Suit."
*Equips the Assault Rifle*
"Now that you have equipped your Assault Rifle, you'll notice that the two numbers on the bottom-left and the bottom-right have changed. To your left is your suits available CPU power, and to the right is your suits Powergrid output. These two numbers determine what you can and cannot use. Later in your game, you'll find many other combinations that work well, and you should feel free to try out anything that you can come up with to improve your combat effectiveness or assist your teammates with their objectives. As long as your modules do not exceed your suits capabilities, you can equip just about everything!"
"Your dropsuit is now able to combat enemies, but it could do with some toughening up. Let's go back to the marketplace and purchase some Armor Plating".
You see where this is going. Make players assemble their militia setups and get a general feel for what all of these funny pictures do that surround my suit.
EDIT; Controls Tutorial.
This tutorial would immediately follow the fitting tutorial and get the user acquainted with the game. I've read that you'll be adding PvE AI into this game, so this idea would work out perfectly when you implement that.
Basically, throw the player into a virtual training environment. For lore sake, we'll call it "Mental Conditioning", to give the new concious basic training so that it can start to bring itself up to par with the other ones that have died thousands of times only to come back to life and garb another gun.
Basically it's a training course that makes the user try out many different weapons, call in vehicles, experience dying, and let them fight some training dummies so they can get a bit of gungame going. Grenades, AV, sniping, vehicle driving, all that fun stuff. Make them capture an objective, hack a vehicle and joyride around in it. Let them experience some of what the game has to offer so they have a general idea for what they want to skill for. |

Codename BG 47 wrote:Maybe some interactive tutorial? AmericasArmy style. You have fireing tut that comes with obstacle/movement course. Fitting tut where you make your fit and see how it is responding to movement/dmg Use of modules, different basic weapons. Vehicles piloting. Of course in the way that every race do :) Minimatar - heavy military course, Gallente - high tech, Caldari - pure combat, Amarr - .... they just pray :D (Sorry if I massed up something with the races). I think that after such tut I would be able to decide who I wanna to be on the battlefield. And also it's playground for all CCP humor like: " So you have chosen Command Dropsuit....well...maybe another day...if you survive"
I haven't played America's Army, but from what I'm reading, it seems like you've got the idea. Give them a taste of various combat styles and inform players of the ideal role each of these suits fit.
Also, for the races -
Gallente - "Just wait until I get close..." Caldari - "Can't touch this" Amarr - "God says I'm better than you" Minmatar - ... I think the best description of these guys I've ever read was "like flying down a set of stairs firing off a pair of uzi's". |

Bump.
If it's a bad idea, just say so. Better than floating in forum limbo for the past few days. |

Drax Intenin wrote:This would be a great option for new players, but making it mandatory would annoy the hell out of me.
It would only be mandatory on your first log-in, and the only reason I suggest it be mandatory is because people are going to download this game thinking it's going to be another CoD or Halo clone, and are going to get angered pretty quickly when people keep mowing them down with their own fits.
Show the new players that this game is much more in-depth than CoD or Halo or BF3 or what have you so that they can have a fighting chance. |
