I've seen a few threads since I started into this beta almost 2 months ago discussing the idea of customizable characters, and female character models. What occured to me today is related to some posts from another thread I had read wondering why we were all standing around the War Room in our combat gear. My idea was that we could have public clones, and combat clones.
[spoilers] The novel Templar One puts forward that the original Templars created by the Amarr were normal humans modified extensively to be compatible with the Sleeper implant that Marcus Jror recovered. Part of their training involved killing their original body, and having them wake up in clones in order to familiarize themselves with the process. These clones are designed to be disposable, with a maximum lifespan of 5 years. [/spoilers]
The Traveller chronicles on this site explore the Minmatar program with members of their own Valklear special forces, including the fact that one of the original team was female, but when they all completed their first transition, they found themselves all in the same male body, including her. It was explained that this was to simplify costs and allow the same generic clone to be usable by all members, eliminating the need to take up space with a custom clone body for each soldier. This also allows them to be far cheaper, as opposed to the customized and highly expensive clones used by capsuleers. This makes sense within the game as well, but outside of combat, would leave us all unable to tell each other apart, and kind of distances the player from any attachment to their character if they have to see that same face.
As far as both backstory and gameplay are concerend, this long winded introduction is to allow me to present the idea of having a public body equipped with the Sleeper implant that is used for moving around the War Barge and in stations, and then the generic, possibly androgynous clone bodies designed to be cheap and expendable that we upload ourselves into in order to fight our battles. This allows Dust players access to the same level of character customization as EVE players, allowing us all to have a unique personage to present to others, while also keeping in line with the concept of us as immortal soldiers using clones.
Just to present an example: we're all supposed to have quarters inside the War Barge right? They even have a bunk, despite the Sleeper implant handling memory archival and eliminating the need for sleep. So, we go to the War Room to get our briefing, then return to our quarters, lie down, and wake up 250 kilometers below in our super-soldier bodies, ready to kick-ass and stomp necks.
Just some ideas I had floating around. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |
