I know that most ideas that the random gamer has go unused and are usually lame and mine probably are but who am I if I don't at least put my ideas out there and see what happens right? Sooo....
I've been thinking about planetary bombardment lately and the mechanics that the Devs have been stumbling on to make it fair and balanced and I think I have a few ideas to lend to it and a few changes that might make it a bit more universal.
First of all, the fact that it was only going to be in Null, I think could be changed, seeing as they were stating in the latest letter about adding bombardment abilities to destroyers. Only being able to bombard in Empire space with destroyers would be a difficult thing to do, seeing as a destroyer gets sneezed on and it goes down.
Secondly, I was thinking about the actual usage of the targeting modules for bombardment. I figure if you make it run on a particular fuel that is expensive or you need to buy licenses from concord and each license gets consumed on each activation. Making them rather expensive will control the average corporation from constantly bombarding. Another control I was thinking of is a cool down period between bombardments. The time I would be unsure of without testing. Maybe an hour? The third thing I was thinking of is a disruption field computer that you can put up on the surface to disrupt locks from orbital bombardments. This last idea I figure would be the main deterrent from orbital bombardment. Whoever controls the field computer controls the choice to launch bombardments.
Thirdly and finally, I wasn't sure if after a planet is conquered, if you get to keep the equipment on the planet or how that works, but using orbital bombardment would need to be a choice of winning or profit in my eyes. Launching an orbital bombardment should destroy most or all of the resell-able equipment on the surface if you choose that winning is more important than the spoils. I think this would be a good control point for using it too. |

Good mechanics thoughts,
BUT,
What if bombardments required real pilots in Eve to launch them in Real Time? And it would require an anchored module or some other mechanic in eve (like the "I can't move" cooldown on a cyno generator). That way, bombardments would be something you could get from your hiring corp only if they wanted to provide it, had the proper equipment/skills, and could effectively use it while being shot at by the dreadnaught that just jumped into the system.
The whole idea is to integrate Dust514 and Eve so everything happens at once.
Just my 2 isk.

They will be launched by real players. Firing from within New Eden. That has already been established by the devs multiple times. At least that is their eventual goal. |

I think that a "cyno" type of thing that pops up on the overview would be good, but the cool down should be about the same, ten minutes i think (I'm not a cyno guy yet) |

I think that was sort of the idea. A scout or logi suit on the surface activates a beacon and the ship locks on with the bombardment module and Doom Commeth. Might not be like a cyno and be system wide, but it will most likely be a local beacon you can see on overview. |

It wouldn't allow for people to jump to you like a cyno, no, but yeah, the beacon so enemy fleet can instantly see you on the overview and be able to warp in.
That would promote orbital combat I would think, and hope for |
