So I'm looking a bit ahead in this thread, but there is something about this game that has begun to concern me a little bit. And that is looking at my Skill Points in EVE I'm just at 26,000,000, and that's with close to two years of play... So now I'm sitting here evaluating Dust514 and it occurs to me assuming I play for a whole day straight non-stop and do relatively well, I can rake in 5,000,000 SP in a day... That's almost a full 20% of what I can do in EVE in two friggin years.
Now for now that doesn't effect anything, and its totally fine, because so far all we have skills for are Combat related activities that apply ONLY to dust. But, eventually they plan on letting Dust players get into industry, which I fully support, but which has some implications that we need to consider. Namely some of these skills I can see Dust players actually sharing with EVE players fully, like Planetary Interaction skills, and certain research and science skills involved in industry...
IF these skills are shared on a 1 to 1 ratio, I need to strongly urge right now, before that even happens, that Dust players NOT be allowed to use their skill points earned in combat to raise skills that could allow the harvesting of resources that could be sold or traded in EVE. Can they have these skills? Yes. Can they trade into EVE? Yes. But just like EVE players these industry skills should HAVE to be qued and further I think all NON-COMBAT abilities based on development of materials, research, planetary development, and resource development, should be passive in the same way EVE skills are.
Now I'm definitely open to alternatives, and I can see balancing fixes being done, but it seems to me they would involve a boost in Dust passive skilling rate and a radical reduction in active skilling rate and reductions across the board in the cost of combat skills in dust so that they are more analogous to the time spans it takes to level skills in EVE even WITH non-stop grinding, and this would still encourage the grind for that minor edge, but not discourage other games from playing casually since most skill points would still be passive...
Frankly I don't necessarily know if I like that idea either.
But one last concern is that they said it would take 7 years to get all the skills in Dust... Well obviously we now know they were talking about with ONLY passive skilling... Because lets be honest guys, there are some hardcore players that will fill out ALL of their skills in 3 months, and we all know it. I have a job I don't have time for that ****... But this needs to be addressed too, one of the best things about EVE is the feeling that there actually is no LEVEL CAP, not because there isn't literally, but because its inconceivable it will ever be reached faster then skills are released... It should be the same in Dust. I go so far to say if its theoretically possible for anyone to MAX out in a year then the balance isn't right, and that's that. I don't care if its a group of friends playing on rotation on one account in a way that normal people couldn't possibly do, I don't care if their gear is maxed and they are the best players in the world, if they can peak all their skills in a year, its not functioning as advertised.
Once again totally open to criticism and correction on this point, but I think its reasonable as well... Since we're supposedly coming from EVE on this topic... |

I think that if they put industrial skills in Dust, they will not be the same that are in EVE, and EVE players and Dust players will be doing different things in industry. If they would be using the SAME industrial skills, with both games, with the actual Dust skill training, they would loose most of the EVE players (like with the AURUM buying remaps or SP problem). And they do not want that. Also, I doubt that console players would care about science skills to research BPOs, mechanics skills to manufacture vehicles, industrial skills, planetary skills... They will only want to shoot to something, make some isk to buy more weapons, an level up. As Dust seems to be evolving, it will become a shooting game not interesting for EVE players. |

I wonder what is the position of the CCP on this issue. So far I have not found the information on which clearly explain how skilling-up in dust could have a look after beta. I'm aware that for now it is based on sp boost and not necessarily players will be able to train characters so fast after day of the premier. |

Well I'd be interested... The way BPO's currently operate in Dust it would be a devastating game breaking event if it were possible to acquire Prototype BPO's in Dust...
However, there have been blogs where they said dust players would be able to manufacture things... They didn't go into any deeper then that though.
Finally CCP has catered to the minorities in the past, if they didn't EVE wouldn't be as diverse as it is, there are not wide numbers of players doing a lot of things in EVE that they still support, so the fact that only a minority of players in Dust will be using these skills based on CCP's history is not evidence AT ALL to support that these features wont be supported... |
