I've been reading/hearing a lot of valid concern from both the "I want Dust to be a traditional FPS" and the "I want Dust to be more like an MMO" camps and I have a good solution for both sides.
Make categorical Skill Points.
This would mean that a VTOL pilot wouldn't be able to grind out experience in order to invest SP in to a the sniper skills vice-versa. It would make sense from both an in game and a meta game view. How would an Immortal Soldier be more capable of controlling a a tank because of their experience with an AR? It rewards you for what you've done not just how much you've done, a point much desired by the FPS leaning.
I propose 6 categories of SP: - Light Arms (AR, SMG, Sniper Rifle, Knife etc.) - Heavy Arms (Turrets, Rockets etc.) - Logistics (Webbifers, Mines, Mobile Drops Links) - Ground Vehicles - Air Vehicles - General
The first five explain themselves. General would be earned to by done things everyone should be doing ,assisting in capturing objectives. keeping a good K/D spread, assists, maybe even an MVP voting system. The General SP would go toward things like an entry level skill in one of the six other skills and skills like Electronics, Engineering, and Dropsuit command. |

Unfortunately it is not incompatible with EVE lore how this system works, as it isn't really "Experience" you are gaining... The game is a collection of instruction manuals on how to use things split up into different levels that you have uploaded into your brain directly... That's the dumbed down version of the lore, therefore the only limiting factor is actually how much receiving capacity your brain has over a period of time before you fry it from trying to pump too much knowledge at once...
Implants play the role of buffering the trauma of increased information input in EVE, neural boosters and combat hardening play this role in dust... The lore is actually incompatible with experience having anything to do with this. Remember your back story is YOU are already an elite soldier selected to become immortal, therefore your incredible multi-talented experience comes with you, and being the epitamy of your trade of killing sure you have things to learn, but its not as significant 'experience' side as it is on the side of technical knowledge... |
