When I first heard of the game, I was really excited for the amazing amount of customization the game would bring. Now don't get me wrong, DUST has an amazing amount of options for you to specialize in.
My one complaint is that the game's dropsuits are too identical in their respective classes. The Militia looks completely the same as the Prototype suit and all the other tiers between.
My request is this; that not only do the different tiers get visually differentiated, but that each race has its own particular variation of each dropsuit class.
What I mean by that is this;
Currently, the Amaar are the only ones who make Heavy Dropsuits, the Gallente make Scouts, the Minmatarr make Logi, and the Caldari make Assault. Lore-wise, this makes little sense.
Obviously, there were ground wars before DUST. As we enter into DUST, we are simply immortal soldiers. Dropsuits were here before the immortal mercenaries, except the soldiers inside were mortal and able to be killed permanently.
So, that stands to reason; why is there only one class for each race?
I would like to see each race get it's own set of Heavy, Assault, Logistics, Scout, Command, and Pilot dropsuits, each with its own Militia to Prototype scale, along with their own visual differences.
This would allow for some heavy customization advances. For instance, the Gallente Assault dropsuit might be better at wielding blasters, and the Gallente Scout might use railguns efficiently. The Gallente Logistics could field remote repair drones and such. The Gallente Heavy would tend to armor tank rather than shield tank. So on and on.
The Amaar would also have all variations of the suits, and tend to focus on Laser Weaponry. This would make it also available to add Amaar focused Laser weapons such as Assault Rifles, Heavy Light Focusing Anti-Armor Lasers (made up name, maybe could take down shields easily but take longer for armor?)
Anyways, you all get the point. I realize of course this would take a lot of time for the devs to make each particular line of dropsuits, model each one differently, make all the visual variations for between Militia and Prototype, etc. etc.
However, what else doesn't take up time in EVE and DUST? Heck, I would be happy if they rolled each suit out one at a time, or even a race at a time. In fact, that would be better than waiting for a mega-update, as it would give us time to test and balance each individual suit.
I really just wanna look at the pretty art of each racial dropsuit. Can you imagine the sleek, organic look of a Gallente Heavy, or the extravagant, armored golden Amaar Assault? And what of the Minmatarr Scout, or the Caldari Logistics?
AT THIS POINT, I WILL GIVE MY PERSONAL IDEAS FOR THE VISUAL DIRECTION OF THE SUITS
First of, the visual differentiation between Militia, Standard, Type II, Advanced, and Prototype. These are simply ideas.
MILITIA: I believe that generally, the Militia suits should look like a stripped down version of the later suits. Less armor, no fancy things... a more sparse and "hasty" look. You are a merc who has been called up quickly and haven't had the time to kit yourself out. You have no armor pads for your joints. Your knees, shoulders, and elbows are bare. You don't have any polycarbon mesh between your plates. Your suit is barely able to sustain the use of your weapons.
STANDARD: You have a little more protection on you, with a few armor pads on your various joints. Pretty much the current look minus one joint armor pad for each body section (shoulder, elbow, knee)
TYPE-II: You are looking more juiced up now. You have armor pads on each section of your body, possibly a bandolier of ammo. Your helmet is better suited to protect you. Several sensors are on your body, and other protective measures line your suit, such as heat dispersion vents and other nifty gadgets.
ADVANCED: Your suit has enhanced armor plating providing better protection once your shields are broken through. Ammo pouches are slung convieniently over your body. A power grid runs up your back (like Isaac Clark from Dead Space) Your helmet is an advanced model providing enhanced vision and protection. You have a small neck guard protecting the your spine. Sensors and other devices are mounted on your suit.
PROTOTYPE: Your suit is the cutting edge. All possible parts of your body is protected; advanced armor plates are placed together providing expanded protection for no cost to movement. Your helmet has an advanced communications and sensor suite, you have all the previous items such as ammo pouches and sensors built into your suit, streamlining manueverability. A full neck guard protects you. You look aesthetically like a Heavy on Weight Watchers... That is, unless you are USING the Heavy... then you look like the baby brother of an MTAC.
One note: I emphasize keeping true to the use of the suit. As stated above, a Prototype Scout should not look like a Heavy. It should simply look more... "fancy", and better protected. Each suit should still be absolutely whatever class it is. Assault should still look Assault, Logistics = Logistics, etc. When I say "armor", that does not mean each tier should be weighed down with more, but rather, each tier should be given better, more efficient armor.
Racial Differences:
Of course, the easiest thing to do is decide the color of each race. Minmatarr will be rusty, Amaar golden, Gallente green, and Caldari grey-blue.
Each should also exude its particular background in EVE though. For example, Amaar suits will tend to look a little heavier than the other suits, with more of a focus on armor tanking.

~Continuing from post one~
Gallente will look more sleek and organic, bio-engineered even, taking note from the spaceships in EVE...
Minmatarr will look more stripped down, barely functional, even at the Prototype level. Held together by Duct-tape, ya know? As much as I hate to bring MAG into this, like a Halo-ized SVER.
And finally, Caldari would look clean, scientific, sterile, and dark. Nothing more than is needed is put onto these suits. They are each designed for a single purpose, cost, and benefit.
Perhaps even Jove could make an appearance, with their dropsuits tying into PvE missions. They would be extremely rare drops, and be immensely expensive on the open market, but very, very advanced, even in the Militia level.
Anyways, feel free to leave comments and suggestions.
The main reason behind these suggestions are the aspect of more customization, and aiding identification. It is currently hard for a militia to pick his fights wisely. Who knows if the guy he is shooting at has 100 more HP thank he thinks? Giving each tier a visual difference would aid in helping a militia decide whether to shoot or not.
The idea for each race to get its own complete set of dropsuits is my own personal one. When I first heard about DUST, and read the dev blog on dropsuits, I immediately looked up pictures of EVE ships and imagined them translated into dropsuits. It is actually kind of disappointing to see that there isn't really any plans for having the breadth of types that EVE has.
Once more, I realize that this would be a monumental task for CCP. However, the benefits it would bring would be humongous. And who doesn't want to see more pretty dropsuits? |
