Ok so i've been trying a few different style of play including running up to people and knifing them in the face and the back. This never works though for 2 reasons: #1 The knife does practically no damage(seriously, you couldn't kill kill a fly with it) . #2 If you do not have any ammo left in the clip of the gun that you were holding when you use the knife (which is pretty much the only time I ever would actually use a knife) you are then forced to reload and cannot cancel the reload by knifing again. |

Before posting, do a search on the forums about the same thing. Here's a hint.. Knife's don't do anything off the bat if you have no skills in them.. If you upgrade your knife skills, you'll do a LOT more damage. (especially if you add the booster) Also, knife's are close in weapons, so don't expect the MAG kill someone 5 feet away thing in 1 hit. |

The part about cancelling reload by knifing I agree with. You can start sprinting and it cancels the reload. The same should be true of knifing. I've had a guy knife charge me while reloading and I would have loved to knife him back. |

I've had some major problems using a knife as well. The "cone" that damage applies to is very narrow, and the range is super-short. Sure, damage is augmented by skills and boosters (I can accept that), but hitting is just nigh impossible. In a sense, rifles (firing 46+ rounds, and then some) are much more efficient, even when you've got the drop on the guy if just because of hit detection for knives in general.
Some changes that might help? Increase the range a SMALL amount, widen the cone of attack for hit purposes some, and reduce the delay for the start of the hit. Because knives aren't lethal things on a "healthy" target, it's nowhere near as much of an issue as other shooters. |

I've only been able to knife a few people, and I kinda like that it's meant to be a last resort and not something you'd try to do to a guy with full health. If someone wants to put the time into the knife to make it better then more power to them. If they put the sp and biotics into making a lethal knife and can actually get ohk's with it, then I'd be amazed. |

I agree, knifing shouldn't be very easy, and the damage shouldn't be ridiculously high, but it should be easier to hit. Or perhaps they should allow you to change them (I don't think the knife we currently have is the Nova Knife is it?) so that they're longer or do more damage or what have you. |

A high powered assault rifle firing over 30 rounds at point blank range is more effective than a 6 inch piece of steel? You sir, have just blown my mind. |

Knifing damage gets pretty high once you get Knife Handling V and the booster. You're a supersoldier from the future--I don't think a one hit knife kill should exists when you've got shields, armor, AND then some bit of health.
One huge bummer for me is that I find myself often trying to sprint out of crouch. I catch myself having to uncrouch myself then sprint. Might not be a big issue, but I've caught myself dead trying to sprint out of crouch. |

The knives are amazingly useful if you put some practice in, and actually level up the skill. Here's a hint. Knife your teammates to watch for the shield marker to get a better idea of the range, if you're not sure. The knife swings from the right, arcing up left. Generally you can hit people slightly off screen to your right, but not your left because of the way the arc swings. So, when you're strafe dancing with someone, circle left around them so they are always on your right if you plan to stab them :)
As far as damage goes, it's perfect. With the level 5 knife handling skill, and 3x prototype damage modifiers for melee you can get it to the point where you can instakill almost any prototype nonheavy except with the heaviest tanks.. Heavy suits die in two swings. The downside is You need to fit two CPU enhancers to do this, considering the melee damage mods are high slots, most suits will have pretty much no tank to make this fit work. Even without damage modifiers at level V handling you can almost instantly gib someone with a weaker fit. Standard assaults will go to like 15% armor if memory serves.
Though, for those who are dedicated in the endeavor will find melee very deadly and quite workable in its current iteration, if you practice. I do agree the range could use a tad of an increase though. |
