I'd never be able to forgive myself if I let my favourite forums go without saying goodbye.
So here I am, to make one last - and typically verbose - solid post.
It's been a journey, hasn't it? If you're still here and reading this, you are most likely quite a devotee. To be here, on the forums, over a year after the end of the game, takes a certain degree of interest. That shared interest sustained a really colourful community over the years, and I'm glad to see some of these names still around.
I spent an immense amount of time here on these forums and in the game. The number of characters I've posted is on the way to 7 million - substantially longer than War and Peace. Ironically, in terms of word count I'm very close to +Ç la recherche du temps perdu - otherwise known as In Search of Lost Time. It's no exaggeration to say that all this time I've spent here, with you, has shaped me as a person. I consider many of you friends. Some of these friendships have developed into solid things that have stood the test of time - I play regularly and talk regularly with people I met here today, and I expect I will do for years to come.
Few games inspired me quite like this one. I've never poured my heart out in feedback threads like I did here anywhere else. Nor have I been sufficiently inspired to write lengthy guides, or run for election, or run a corp.
DUST may not have been the greatest game. Regardless, it had its moments, and some of it was genuinely unique. I've never been able to find a fitting system as comprehensive or engaging in an FPS anywhere else. The element of loss is rare, and an outright power increase from progression was brave. More than this, though, it was always the community who kept me here. You contributed to it, all of you. Faction forum warfare was a joy, and I am glad to have met many on both sides.
We've come to the end of this line on our journey. The game itself has been gone for a long while now, and soon our beloved forums will go, too.
But the end of the line needn't be the end of the journey. We know Project Nova is in development. Maybe something will come of it. Maybe not. But when we get off this train, I think I'm willing to wait at the platform and see if there's a transfer.
Cheerio, DUST 514 forums. I'll miss you.
Gentlemen. It has been a pleasure. o7

Whilst we wait, do feel free to come and have a chat, by the way. We've got a discord chat with several hundred DUSTers in.

To say this has been a journey would be an understatement. DUST came in around my early teen years. I am leaving my teens in April of next year.
DUST, and this community, have shaped me greatly. Some of the greatest friends I've met over the web, and in general, have come from this very game, this very community, and this very forum. My memories of this place are many, as just like Arkena, I've spent countless of my keyboard's rated keystrokes in discussing my favorite game. I used to have dreams of it at night, I used to think in the middle of class at school how to correct a balancing error, and I used to reminisce about my favorite battles. I've even learned useful concepts and skills in communication that serve me to this very day.
It's really interesting to look back at my earliest posts, from when nearly half my current lifespan hasn't passed yet, and see just how much I've changed over the years. My English vocabulary alone might be the biggest example of that. This place really is a record of sorts.
This is an end of an era, but the beginning of a new one. I am optimistic about Project Nova. When the day comes, I expect to see each and every one of you fuckers there, on the forums, continuing this great community, or I will personally hunt you down.
So, I raise this imaginary glass to all the wonderful people I've met, including you Arkena. I raise it to DUST, for inspiring my developing mind with visions of greatness, even if never realized. I raise it to the dev team, in its multiple incarnatinos of people who have come and gone, for creating this platform. And I raise it to the forums, for one last hurrah.
Meet you on the other side, Soldier.
Cat, signing out o7

Holy sh*t,goodbye DUST forums. This is absolutely sad, to be honest. I'm gonna say all the typical things like how DUST was truly the most unique game that I've ever played, how the community was top notch (believe it or not), how the game has one of the more unique communities out there (if not the most), and despite how shi*tty the gameplay could be (or was) I still logged on to play with my internet friends every f*cking day and night (even until the point of me falling asleep on coms *multiple* times). This game will always be held in high regard in my mind until I'm six feet under, without a doubt.
Now that all that's out of the way, I'm gonna take the remaining 5282 characters to thank a lot of people.
First and foremost, mad props to not just Rattati, but the backend people, the GMs, the QA nerds, the coders, art people, past EPs, and every single person who has ever touched this game, or inspired it, or whatever, that wears that slick CCP dev shirt-jacket thing. Every single one of you have changed my life. Imagine, space pixels have changed some r*tarded Florida man's life. F*cking crazy.
Secondly I'd like to thank Max-Pain-Inc, the first corp I seriously joined and made an effort with. I dont think any of you are still here, but you guys are what made me keep playing this game. Setme Illyis, Chuck Skywalker, Eblastinya, Feds, Bee Doug, Bumbles Luna, and the rest of that corp that went on to form Demonic Cowboys (whom I will name in just a second). I f*cking love you guys from the bottom of my heart and am proud to call you friends. Setme and Chuck, congrats on your wedding. I hope only the best for you guys. It's crazy what video game friendships lead to, right?
Third - Demonic Cowboys, the corp I spent, without a doubt, the most time playing with (sorry, 1NC0R). The days and nights that we shared will always be remembered. I fell asleep and snored on coms so many times, it became commonplace to assume that Bait had fallen asleep around 2-2:30am. Individually I'd like to thank Ironblade Demoinc (the best man north of the Mason-Dixon line), Dirtnap Blowtoth (who introduced me to the most metal song ever) , Don Kiebles (who instilled a love for the mandolin in me, such to the point that I bought one and can kind of play it), Silentdeath54321, Garra, SG CY (the one cool Japanese guy in the whole d*mn game), Minoan (you beautiful Greek bastard), Cyclops Red, DaVe, and Jeremiah Wickles (f*ck your farm and sh*tty internet), and BLAAAAAZZZZEEEE - how could I forget?! The one person I met in the game from Upside Down land. You all will always have my heart. If by some chance any of you see this, remember that a sperm whale has a massive donger - Don said so.
Fourth - 1NC0R, my current corp. Diques, Cawks, Paynus, Genocide. F*ck you guys.
Last but certainly not least, the crew over at Biomassed. I came on to the show after being a listener for a few months, and (again) I feel like I have made lifelong friends. So to Pokey, Jay, and Xel - thanks guys. F*ckin' love y'all.
I lied, my last shout-out goes to Darth Carbonite, who wrote me a poem.
No homo - except for Darth
i didnt use 5k characters. f*ck that

man, i know i just posted a few similar things to this in a few other threads, but yeah, i gotta leave my mark at the end. i've been lurking for a while - i havent been as active on the forums as i'd like, nor was i as active in the game when it was alive, but i've always held a soft spot for DUST - I love EVE, and to have a game on the ground - that was something i've wanted. the whole EVE soldier deal. I loved it, and I still hold out for nova, because even though i wasn't so active, i kept coming back. DUST kept drawing me back, no matter what I just loved it. so much so yeah, with the forums going, I gotta post. I gotta get my last say in. I gotta leave a mark, like I was here, you know? but yeah, DUST was... so much. It didnt reach its potential, and god knows i hope nova will, but damn im gonna sit and wait for all the news on nova eagerly, just like i was until i got in on DUST
what i'm saying is o7 it's been a big pleasure, y'all, and i hope i get a chance to actually socialize more on nova and i get to see a lot of you! |
