Now that it's finally ending, what was the reason for keeping the forums up for so long after game's shutdown? I can't say that it was communication. I for one hoped that it would be, or that this forum would be used as a bridge to a new release at some point in the future, or as a seeded community as a test bed and to propagate interest by word of mouth or social media.
None of those can be true in two days. I could joke and dismiss it all by saying that CCP must have prepaid for the DUST514 domain name, and that now this domain has expired; but I don't want this to be read as cynical. I am truly curious what the intent was?
I am really going to miss this group.

I think they've already mentioned the reasoning for shutting down, something having to do with some tech issues with EVE Gate. But they can still communicate with the Discord, Rattati was actually chatting earlier today.

Yeah. I get why the shutdown, but I'm still wondering what the point was in keeping this all going for so long after the game ended.

Theres a few reasons they stayed
- To keep the community alive. We are a loyal, if begrundingoy addicted, community. It made no sense to throw is out when many companies dream of having similar fans.
- To get feedback for Nova. As much as we self deprecate ourselves for being whiny and sarcastic- we do actually have moments of lucidity where we provide constructive feedback. That helps steer development to keep the developers from possibly including or not including something that could enrage the community on release. There are issues that could easily be fixed in hindsight by simply consulting players in other games, so it was smart to keep us around as an opinion panel.
- It helps give credibility that Nov a is a thing. A lot of people are waiting for it. If CCP had simply closed off Dust along with the forums and basically told everyone to watch paint dry until they had something- then a lot of people would probably forget about it and CCP would have to try to gain hype from square one. Basically they would throw away any credibility they would have given themselves with Dust. So the forums being alive kept the hope alive as well. And this is only a theory, but it could also have helped assure stock holders that CCP wasn't simply going to cancel development of Nov a like they did with a certain other game.

You know, I think that is a noble concept. My nature is generally to lean that direction too as it is a wonderfully romantic notion; to give value to the time and dedication many players have given to this game, to CCP by proxy of these forums, and to the idealistic view that there is a future here in trade for continued commitment to that idea.
But alas, I suppose I've slowly devolved into a salty cuss over the years. I used to be very positive and supportive, arguing the very ideals that you listed and anyone can see that in my forum post history. Truly, I appreciate all that you've written. I still want to believe in your list, but I have to wonder though: are we just telling ourselves this to rationalize our obsession in something that we still don't really know will exist? I mean, technically speaking, many of those ideas disappear tomorrow with the exodus of these forums. We have no landing zone to leap to from here. Yes, there are player-driven communities available but that only speaks to the dedication of the player support for persistent existence and not so much to CCP's end game support for this community.
The glass is half empty for me lately. I could perceive it as half full, but really it's the remaining player base that pushes that view. Is that enough? At least here, I could log in from time to time, and while I would not see updates direct from the powers that be, I could see a small, but dedicated community holding out hope on an idea the forums encouraged. So again, the day after tomorrow do those ideals still hold true?
