Wasn't DUST still making money before they announced shutdown? I can only assume that it was to create distance between DUST and Nova, but with how long Nova's taking the shutdown felt a little premature.

The world may never know...
If Dust were still around, I wouldn't really be playing as much as I used to a year before the plug. I kinda got burnt out, and my mates started to get bored/aggravated with Dust. Plus, with the announcement of "Dust 2" as in Legion and then Nova, many other players started leaving.
Let's face it. Not only the game, but the community itself was on life support at that time.
We just have to wait for Nova, and how to God CCP ports over the good things about Dust *cough* customization at every level *cough* and throw out the bad stuff.

When DUST was shut down the community was on life support... now we are the walking dead.

What Fox said. Plus, as I recall there were some major server changes that were about to happen as well.
On top of that CCP didn't want to create the perception that they were trying to take financial advantage of the community like they had before the Legion announcement. That is why they cut off sales. A game with no revenue can't turn a profit.
All that is the likely why they shut Dust down when they did.

I think people strongly misunderstand the whole "Dust is profitable!" thing
Yeah, when you've got less than 5 guys working on the game, it's probably easier to stay in the black. But barely breaking even does not mean the game is really considered a financial success.
Not to mention, they probably wanted a very clear division between Dust ending and whenever a theoretical Nova beginning will be. Running them straight into each other back to back brings up some serious implications I'm sure they're trying their best to avoid.

Because the Dust we knew of was no longer. What they closed was an imitation.

I got an odd feeling dust was only making money for a few months when and after they announced that but i dont see how it could have been when it was getting closer to shutdown.
