Dust was designed to promote community interaction through squads, and it was done well. I loved squadding up.
Due to technical difficulties, I ended up running solo the majority of the time. I noticed that many other players ran solo as well, for whatever reason.
What often happened in pubs was that of the two matched teams, one team would have one squad and the other wouldn't have any squads. We know that the power of orchestrated squad play was enough to throw off the balance between these two teams.
I propose that, while the player base was small, if there were a solo option for each game mode where teams were comprised entirely of individuals and squads were not placed in the match, then those matches would have been more closely balanced and "Scotty" would have been associated with less curse words.
TLDR; A game with a player base large enough to offer a soloists mode would benefit by recognizing that not all players work in squads for whatever reason. |

I ran solo 95% of the time and didn't really have problems. Later on in the life cycle it was an issue, but that was due to the dwindling player base more than anything.

I ran solo too, around the same amount of time (95%). I'd get into Amarr FW sometimes though, when they were introduced, and earned myself a...oh god what's it called...the Commando suit...Paladin! That's it!
Fun times... I miss them.

It wasn't about people playing solo vs squads. It was about poeple having other priorities than winning. Whenever I ran solo I was doing the same amount of work as a whole squad :) It was fine with me bacause I like to do all kinds of stuff.
Only few were providing the utmost necessary uplinks. The more I played the more I got the feeling that you can count only on yourself.

I don't know if it would be worth having 2 queues... Just a better match-maker that put pre-made squads on opposite sides.
As much as I liked prating about on my own, I doubt it would have been as effective if someone else weren't there to pick up the slack... In-fact I know this to be certain, from the times I enjoyed being a lone LAV taking fire from the entire enemy team, while my team sat comfortably in the red zone.
Games just need a little more incentive to get the solo players doing things that help the team instead of hindering it...
I mean, just how useful was all that tower uplink spam I took part in as a noob trying to get enough sp to become competitive?
Answer - Not very, but everytime a teammate jumped off that roof to their death, they then respawned and died again... I Got a lot of sp and the match ended nice and fast netting me a good way to grind... Now if maybe you got a few bonus points when someone survived a while or hacked an objective after spawning on your link, I'd have been better off putting them in more strategically useful places... But the people loved them roof-links, so who was I to argue.
- and on a side note, I really missed being able to jump into a match and join a random squad... Please bring it back in Nova. |
