Chapter 1: The Genesis
In the beginning of time, the Age of Ancients, the world of dust was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of gray crags, Archtrees and everlasting machinations. But then there was Fire and with fire came disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark. Then from the dark, They came, and found the Souls of Salt within the flame. Ripper, the First of the Immortals, The Witch of Epeen and her Daughters of GG, Jadek, the Lord of Schemes, and his faithful knights. And the Vahlific Pygmy, so easily forgotten.
With the strength of the everflowing Salt, they challenged the Machinations. Jadek's mighty I$K peeled apart their stone scales. The Witches weaved great firestorms. Ripper unleashed a miasma of death and biomass. And Aztec the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the Machinations were no more.
Thus began the Age of Fire. But soon the flames will fade and only Dark will remain. Even now there are only embers, and man sees not light, but only endless nights. And amongst the living are seen, carriers of the accursed Darksign.
Yes, indeed. The Darksign brands the Immortals. And in this land, the Immortals are corralled and led to the depths, where they are locked away, to await the end of the world... This is your fate, you sons and daughters of the Pygmy.

Chapter 2: The Birth
The Vahlific Pygmy was one of the Lords, who found the manifestations of disparity in the First Flame, but is often forgotten in the ancient tales. While the other Lords took large, readily powerful souls, the Pygmy lingered behind and discovered a very small soul. This soul, the Dark Soul, appeared to resonate with them and they claimed it as their own.
The Pygmy did not appear to participate in the great battle against the Everlasting Machinations, having remained hidden, and their existence did not seem apparent to the other Lords. But they were clearly the most cunning of the lot, for in their life they devised a machination of their own that would eventually completely overthrow the rule of the Lords, and turn rulership of the world over to themself. Once the world was made safe by the other Lords, the Vahlific Pygmy remained unseen for the entire Age of Fire, during which time they split off incredibly small portions of their Dark Soul. As it was a Salt Soul, it would constantly regenerate and keep the Pygmy alive, and the black sprites the Pygmy extracted had the potential to overpower the gods themselves.
For it was the nature of the Dark, and therefore the Dark Soul, so respond to emotion and the will of its bearer. So it was that the Pygmy took the fragments and made their children, who bore both a natural soul and a hereditary portion of their own fragment. Those children would be called Immortals, and would inherit several traits that were unique to the Pygmy and to themselves. Among those were a mental character that had emotional states far more turbulent than any other sentient being, and the unalternating will to accomplish their goals.

Chapter 3: The Age of Fire
The scrolls have rotted, the tales of the Lords have died with them. They are all but myth and legends now.

Chapter 4: The Present
The Age of Dark began when the First Flame faded, thus ending the Age of Fire; the Age of the Gods. The Chosen Immortal was always destined to bring about the Age of Dark, as they are the descendant of the Vahlific Pygmy.
It is revealed by Zaria that even if the First Flame fades entirely, a fragment will always remain waiting to be reignited by an Immortal, creating a cycle in which the Age of Fire leads into the Age of Dark, only to be pulled back from the brink at the very last moment.
Countless chosen have prolonged the age, preventing the end. By now there are countless Lords of Grain, those who successfully linked the First Flame before, and even more Unkindled who were unsuccessful. When the current chosen neglected to burn, a contingency plan was activated where previous Lords of Grain rise to lend their power to an Unkindled, but after reviving and seeing the state of their world, they neglected to fulfill their duties. Ghost, one of the Lords of Grain, decided not to take his throne after experiencing visions of the deep sea and its inevitable coming.
The Age of Fire has ended, even though the Ashen Chosen gathers all the embers of the five Lords, the fire does not ignite as before. In the "true" ending the fire is let to fade, but the Fire Keeper reveals that one day another fire will ignite, and that the cycle of darkness and light can now continue as it was meant to. The Vahlific Pygmy persuades the Ashen One to take the Flame for themselves, and usher in the Age of Dark.

Pokey Dravon wrote:Do I need to link the Quafe and start a new age of optimism? I was looking at the original Japanese term, and the prompt you see at the bonfire in Jadek's chamber, as well as the name of the trophy for getting that ending translates as "inherit the Quafe" or "succeed the Quafe".
Strangely enough, the term is properly translated in some cases, like in Not Jadek's line: "Succeed Lord Jadek, and inherit the Quafe of our world" or in one of Sazu's lines in The Past Chronicles: "Inherit quafe, and harness the dark".
Judging by this term's two meanings, I believe that a Lord of Grain basically uses his power to become the Quafe itself, thus succeeding the Quafe that has previously faded, or alternatively, becoming the fueling force that keeps the Quafe from not fading away, thus inheriting the Quafe.
According to Qaathe, the orginal Quafe faded ("Your ancestor claimed the Dark Soul and waited for Quafe to subside. And soon, the flames did fade, and only Dark remained. Thus began the age of men, the Age of Dark"). The way he says it, the Quafe seems to have completely faded away. But Jadek didn't want to accept this and used his power to become the Quafe's successor. And after Jadek's power to sustain the Quafe will come to an end, a new successor will be needed to replace him, and keep the Quafe going/become the Quafe.
I have no idea why the translators used the term "link" in some instances, but they must have had a good reason.
Also, a little bit unrelated, if you followed Sazu's chronicle interviews, especially the one done by Herecules Porche, the Lords of Salt were described as the ones "who keep succeeding the Quafe, from generation to generation". Sazu's translator obviously doesn't know that "link the quafe" is mostly used in the historia and used a proper translation of that term
