Ever hear of Starcraft: Ghost?
Ghost was an uber-hyped game announced in 2002 for N64, where players would play a 3rd person character from Starcraft. They had trailers, game-play footage, the works.
Long story short, development became delayed and delayed, people were fired, teams changed, the game re-worked, and eventually people just stopped talking about it. The game never released.
It made the #2 spot in this list of the most Infamous Vaporware games.

One thing important to remember, CCP hasn't been drumming up hype about Project Nova, it's been us, the community who has. As far as the game development cycle is concerned, Nova is still in the relatively early development stages, and although parts of it will be accelerated (they'll probably re-use the rendered assets in some way for instance) that only represents a small fraction of overall development time.
I do not think it's likely to be vaporware, since all indications we have is that the team is increasing in size, not decreasing. CCP's silence seems to be more indicative of their overall goal of distancing themselves from the early days of DUST's development, and hype that's been generated has been coming from us, the community, not from CCP in any official capacity.
But yes...Project Nova, Agent Nova...Spooky. Almost as if Nova is used fairly commonly or something, particularly in space settings |
