I read that building assets/models alone was into the millions... Hence why they're planning to re-use them in Nova. that would be quite an investment to just walk away from!

CCP spent 9 years working on World of Darkness and walked away from that. The Carbon engine as well was part of that write off, and they only used that for one room in EvE. Walking away from the assets developed fro Dust 514 would be a drop in the ocean for CCP.

It's kinda sad. In those early days of the Mercenary and Elite pack, I WANTED to spend money. It was exciting and didn't feel like a cheap cash grab and I was eager to try the unique stuff those packs offered. That's how it should be, players should want to spend money, and that's kind of the key to successful F2P monetization
Towards the end though with the keys and the warbarge complements? Uhg. Like...I get it, game was in dire straights and needed extreme action to save it, so fine. But that doesn't change the fact that it felt more like a cell phone game monetization more than anything....Which certainly didn't make me want to spend money on it.
I hope whatever model they come up with for Nova has the feel that we had in the Beta.

I wouldn't have bought the AUR Packs just for the keys of I actually had responsibilities like I do now, though haha. The rest, yeah, probably. I think I had 4 Quafe Knives, 2 Quafe CRs, 1 RR, 1 Sniper, 1 ScR, 2 HMGs, 1 FG. Not a single Gallente weapon

I can't even remember the pricing structure. I think I bought at least 2 veteran's pack. Was there one above that? If so, I may have that once. Pretty sure I didn't go over 400, but might have been close. Really weird to think about that, but I didn't have much else to spend money on at the time.

I do remember and miss my Thales Scout BPO. I started running that a lot during my last days in. So whatever I paid for to get that, add that to the list. That might have been a CB reward or something. I just can't remember crap anymore.

I was half way through level 13 at the sever close.
That takes into account hours played, concurrent logins etc etc but the biggest contributor is of course Aurum spend.
Fairly easy to figure out mine because I only purchased via the online store wallet, top ups for Dust 514.
There was also quite a few PSN cards brought from stores as well if there was an offer on but these aren't shown on your PSN account history unfortunately. I'd estimate about -ú200 of them.
But according to my online PSN account it comes to -ú1134. The -ú has of course tanked since then (thanks Brexit) so taking that into account roughly $2000 for you US peeps.

For me, it was a matter of time vs. cost of entertainment. Hour per hour it was cheaper playing dust than going to a movie once or twice a month. I didn't have time to cap due to my job and life matters, so AUR gear helped level my playing field as a solo player against squads that cooperated. Boosters were nice too.
Edit: I should say that I also believed in the potential of what I hoped dust would evolve into. In some way I guess that part of me felt like I was on the ground level of the start of what might become a great epic community and experience.

WOW Thanks! that was a great anwer to my question. Now I get it. It often felt difficult for me too to find something that gave me as much motivation and energy for a school week as DUST did.
Therefore I should have spend money on the game too, dangit!

I did spend money and don't regret a cent, but that end of game monetizeation was pure cheezy hucksterism, even worse was that the pathological vet/noob disparity was amplified by the warbarge damage bonus.
Dust was in desperate straits and all is forgiven, but i detested seeing New Eden with that stain on her.
If the devs build the engine right this time they'll reap the rewards: things like decals, patches & paintjobs don't require a ton of resources once the foundations are in place.

I think I spent a little over $100 of my own, then about $50 from random people on youtube / forums. Despite my overwhelming bitterness, I don't regret it either. I also bought the EVE Second Decade thing so I could sell the codes for ISK, plus the art book is nice.

Around 400$ in 3 years. Then you add the SSD that I bought specially for DUST, new DS3 controller, too much time... Huuum that ruined my social real life during 3 years, however thanks CCP, I have no regrets, this game and the community was so fun.

I have the same sort of value/cost think as Byte does.
I consider gaming to be a very coast effective means of entertainment. I spent -ú1200 on Dust over its lifetime but considering that I spend close to 2500 hrs playing on it according to my last stat request ticket, that's less than 50p an hour. Bargain.

Somewhere between $1000-$1500
I bought a TON of those Faction packs, especially when they were $10 and $5 (normally 20, felt like an idiot for buying them at $20), and the rest of the money went to aurum packs or merc packs just for more boosters
Though I didn't spend much in the last 6 months-year of the game's life because I had hundreds of prototype weapons and suits from those packs left and I was running out of things to spend sp on (the rest of my aurum went to occasional respecs)
The only thing I regret spending money on was the $100 pack that came with bluprint standard gear. I thought it was amazing because at the time I hardly ever ran proto and took advantage of cheap suits. The car was nice I guess, but I used the gold LAV more
Speaking of the gold LAV, that was a code that came with my new PS3, which I guess is technically the most expensive thing I purchased for Dust. My fat PS3 died/overheated/yellow lighted (from too much dust...literally) and the only game I really played at the time was Dust 514
