Hi retired mercs.
In search for a new game after Dust514 was canned, I have found a new home, in the Star Citizen Universe.
Since the release of the new Alpha patch is imminent, CIG is letting anybody into the fun, by giving non backers 48 Hours of freefly and tryout.

I can't tell you, since I have been flying in the PTU since the weekend. And bugsmashing is going quite well. The FPS mode is coming along nicely. So far I had some really nice matches (not quite used to it yet. But the zero G areas make some nice alternative routes possible.
The flight modle changes, are in constant review, and i hope that they will find a nice balance. |

Star Citizen is looking more and more likely to be a thing. Other than Nova it is the only thing on my Radar that really interests me. But I am still running an old Mac, and I won't be buying a PC for a 2 day trial. I will likely wait at least until the open Beta.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

That's a wise decision anyway. The alpha 2.6 isn't yet out for open use. It's on what's called the Public Test Universe, and that isn't available to everyone.
So, you can currently get in for a free fly event, and that's totally free, the Star marine, FPS portion, of Star Citizen will likely be a day or 12 out yet until it's released on the "PU", or Public Universe, which is the Aapha server available to all.

My problem with Star Citizen is that its been on the shelf for so long. Wasn't it this time last year they were promising the FPS shooter aspect?
Plus, my laptop is not even close to decent enough to play Star Citizen. Hell, I can't even play EVE Online anymore since all the upgrades.
It sucks being a "retired" Dust merc with nothing but Battlefield 1, The Division's "Dark Zone", Destiny (ftfo) and Overwatch to really play.
Oi vey.

Well, they would probably move the thread into the of topic forum, and dlelete all duplicates....
But the point is. That the only online shooter I've played so far, was Dust.
I miss the community, and would like if some old dusties move their rotting corpses over to Star Citizen. Even if it's only to gap the time until Nova is out.
Star Citizen is becoming more and more a thing. And evenwith the drawbacks and fails of the past. The game has come a long way. And it's not far from the finish line.
If you are curious, why some of the stuff took so long, just have a look at this:

As an estimate, I'd say it's 2 to 3 years from the fuinish line.
On the other hand, Star Marine, the FPS module is probably only a few days until it's released to all of the backers. This part, currently, is the part most similar to Dust 514.

The big problem people are having is that the game didn't used to have enough money to take that long to develop, but now it does. They keep giving realistic dates for delivery of what they can produce, and then they get more funding and start developing more features that require pushing the delivery back so they can release a product with more features.
We - the community - specifically voted for CIG to continue their crowdfunding campaign, but now it's becoming obvious that it now pretty much has them trapped.

It would only be trapped if the progress they are making didn't stack on top of itself. It takes a lot to build a universe, and it's always refreshing to see new systems slowly turn online and make the game run better and become more complex.
When I backed it a couple years ago I figured I would see an actual relase anywhere between 2017 at best and 2020 at worst. With the modular release style, I figured there would be a ton of back and forth with the community and devs on each aspect of the game, so that whenever it is released it will have a great foundation on day 1.

Bluescreen is a failure of your system.
It's probably due to too many network connections, because that's a common issue with some systems and the SC installer. Turn off P2P connections before you start the download and see if that helps. A bluescreen though, is a hardware issue.
Also, you don't need to buy a $2500 package. You can get into SC for $45 dollars and be fine. |

Meh. Star Citizen is less a game then Dust ever was. And I still am doubtful if Star Citizen will work once they put everything together. Also the focus is obviously on space battles and not shooter stuff.

Once we have the combined arms aspect it's actually going to get pretty insane.

Star Citizen is in Alpha, and isn't claiming to be a "complete" game. That being said it already offers significantly more than Dust ever did. It's only going to grow from here on out as well. |

Yeah, I've seen Templar one in some matches... maybe the same one from Dust?
Considering hardware: I'm running SC on a very dated Phenom X6 2800 and it's running fine in the Arcade modes (Electronic Access/ Arena Commander/ Star marine) GPU is a R9 Nano. Fine means, not worse than Dust lol. So in Star Marine and especcially in the Persitent universe (the open world mode) you will struggle with framerates. This is mostly due to the netcode not finished yet. The base foundation for the netcode is on the horizon though. It will launch with 3.0.
On a general note, Star Marine has developed into a similar fast paced gameplay as Dust had. Especcially the fast traversal of alternative routes via EVA, is a blast. And you never know where the next enemy is coming from. Even with the personal radar, gameplay is frantic. I really enjoy Star Marine atm, and would be glad to see one or the other of you guys over there.

The development teams for Star Marine and the space monkeys are separate, they're just working from the same engine.
Trying to compare DUST to Star Marine is like trying to compare the flavors of apples and pants. They're too different.
Star Marine is very much similar in combat pacing, but that's about where the similarity ends.
There's also not yet support for the ships with docking collars to lamprey up and drop boarders into enemy ships. So a lot of the features for the game are in infancy.
On top of that, everything in star citizen is a RESOURCE HOG. There's no "moderate computer requirements," even after they've made the swap to the Lumberyard engine.

The Lumberyard swap isn't an entirely new engine. It's just networking backend modules. |
