The names in Dust 514 are limited to names that haven't been picked for EVE. I think that's cruddy. That severely limits the names we can use. It's like adding World of Warcraft with Guild Wars and expecting to be able to pick a semi coherent name.
Please give us a completely new name base. CCP, maybe you can give EVE players an option to reserve a name for Dust 514 if they want to? Or, maybe only keep the name reserved for EVE players that login to Dust 514 to keep their name reserved? |

In a real universe, people have the same names as other people.
In a real universe, some people die and go away and everyone forgets about them.
In this digital universe, people never really die, they just take the good names then stop playing EVE so you can't have it. |

When people are immortal, name sharing gets a lot more problematic. If we were playing one life characters that would be different. Also I can't think of one game where it would be a good idea to let players have the same ID. Remember DUST mercs are going to be in the same corps, same corp channels, and same mailings as EVE players. |

Pretty much. If you have everyone as part of the same system, you simply can't have the same character names, it would cause SO many problems.
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to find some combination of a first and last name that you like and isn't taken. |

Ah, I didn't know that. Same corp channels and mailings? You obviously know more about the EVE universe than me.
I hope they could work out something. Like maybe implementing a serial number into players accounts like a SSN for U.S. citizens? That way we could have the same name and still be identifiable. Have a date of creation similar to a birth date in everyone's file perhaps as well, so no one can pose as a high tenure EVE player? So even if the same person was in the same exact corp, had the same bloodline, nationality, specialty, whatever else, you could still tell by their profile info.
I don't know, I'm just throwing out ideas. I'm just saying the names are going to be pretty bland and unmemorable (I foresee lots of Xx xX's, L's meant to be 1's, and crazy chains of numbers like 37739292) if we try to shove two universes together and can't copy names. |

Although somthing like a SSN would technically make each account unique, it would still be too easy to impersonate other people if they don't take the time to go check your ID Number, plus it is a matter of identity. I mean sure you may want a name that someone in EVE has, but think of it if the roles were reversed. I know I'd be pissed as hell if I saw someone in Dust running around with my character name from EVE. |

If your name has profanities etc. in EVE and a GM has to change it you are assigned a new name of for example "Caldari Citizen 2098992" which is oddly fitting considering the near fascist-capitalist regime of the Caldari state. |

Two layers of ID is unnecessary. Immortals do not share names. It would be quite confusing to figure out which god gets the tribute if they have identical names, and saying "Dear GODLY PLAYER, who is SSN#556834, not to be confused with GODLY PLAYER SSN#556843, please donate 10 ISK to feed my planet for a whole year" just doesn't have a good ring to it. |

@noc : great point, plus a potentially unsettling look at a real life system.
Gods hate it when somebody else uses their name. Jupiter has his name so that Zeus doesn't fry him with lightning bolts! He'd win too, the Greek ones have many more years under their belts. |

Just do __your name__ ToTheGround
You see, my cousin, Switch4 ToTheGround, wanted to do a last name of "WithASpaceHelmetOn" - but there were too many characters.
After the reconsideration, the name took on extra meaning, because after all, I'm MirrorGod, from space, and I'm goin TO THE GROUND |

The problem with this is very problematic.. Consider the following.. You're setting up a contract for an eve character to transfer some items.. You do a search for Asher Night. and you get 4 different people.. Which is the right Asher Night?
To alleviate the problem you're having.. Consider this.. Eve Online name. Asher Night DUST514 Name: Asher N1ght
problem solved.. you have your name, and now everyone knows (including you) that if you want to send mail to your Dust bunny to use the N1ght one.
This is even more problematic if you have let's say 2 guys with the same name in the same corp. One of you applies to another corp. How would the other corp know, which of the 2 characters is applying? Sure the API would give them all the info, but they would still have no way of telling the 2 players apart. (ignoring char portraits since those can be made to look like someone else quite easy)

Thats why you have a surname to chose.
Dont you think "Ender" is a name taken?
lol
Still, i got it, because of the surname.

How about we keep it simple. You contract something to yourself, but because someone else has the same name he then has access to those items and accepts them. Unless, you really want more coding with the risk for more bugs. I for one will live with the dwindling number of names. Just need to learn to be more creative. |

(Disclaimer: I overheard this somewhere. No source provided.)
We already have this issue in the real world with certain actors and other film industry people. If you want to join their club, you need a unique name. If your name conflicts with someone already in the industry, you have to pick a new one to use as your identity in the industry. This is why you sometimes see actors with uncommon middle initials like 'X'.

There's probably 100million+ name variations out there. If you don't take some generic name or single word out of the dictionary, that is. Use a generic name and be creative with the last name. Or be creative with the whole thing.

Do what I do. Just use your real name.
Baring that open up a favorite book.
Eve is known for its latteral thinkers. Adapt or just give up now...
especially if you want a game thats been designed to integrate with another game to not be integrated with the game its been designed around integrating with.
