Are they really dumbing the customization system to only 32 loadouts? If so that's pretty disappointing. It's what made this game special apart from other shooters.

From the PC gamer interview I like how CCP is finally settling on getting the mechanics right because it is what should be focused on foremost. For instance from what I saw there is a double jump jet pack animation sort of thing, which doesn't sound overpowered or insane like it does in Dust 514 current incarnation (seriously I heard that there is a "jump" module?).
Switching gears, from what little I saw in the gameplay I would like to give one piece of feedback. I noticed that there is a arrow from where you are shot and it seems to follow the original attack and around objects. This sounds great because it would open up electronic warfare, maybe have modules, weapons equipment mess with it.

Destructoid wrote:In all actuality, branching class trees mean that there are 32 different roles. Sentinel, Vanguard, Support, Assault, Infiltrator, and Sharpshooter are the six easily identifiable ones. It gets more specialized from there, with loadouts able to mix and match weapons freely.
Again, things are likely change, but the interview clearly says there is at the very least the ability to choose which weapon you want.

The maneuverability, at least at this early stage, is an improvement from what we had in Dust.
All suits, heavies included, are able to "vault" over low objects like boxes and fences. The jump jets/double jump is (fortunately) nowhere near as extreme as the myofib modules.
Press space once to jump, press it again to get a short push up/forward. Two classes have this jump ability in the demo; Vanguard and Sharpshooter.

From what I got 32 predetermined loadouts which you have to play to unlock equipment for your own loadout? At least that's how I interpreted it.

So are modules scrapped entirely? Just basic things like weapon and equipment?
Asking, because even a casual game like Destiny doesn't dumb things down that far.

Very true.
One of their biggest goals was to prove they had a solid shooter in the works. I totally agree having hundreds of modules to fit and mess with would be awesome, but I also understand that just wasn't the point of this first reveal.

So far it is looking good in my opinion. As an EVE player, I wish they'd have SOMETHING to link us in a bit, even if they just bring back the cross-game-shared local chat right away. I completely agree with, and frankly emphasize that they should indeed be reinforcing the feeling that you are part of an actual, larger, breathing universe whenever you play this. Hopefully we will see a return to planetary conquest sometime sooner than later, at that. The thing I am worried about is the progression system. What made me fall in love with Dust really was the customization, as flawed as it could be. I loved that I felt like a mercenary, buying whatever exotic equipment matched what I needed. What worries me is that he practically described Call of Duty in explaining loadouts: You get various prebuilt load outs but unlock parts of those loadouts to use in you own custom ones.... I really don't see much difference, other than that you have to actually use the parts you want to unlock. Now, I don't want to pass judgement before we see exactly what is going on. However, I just really hope however this system works is more inventive than I think it is. The other thing is part of Dust's edginess was that your gear was paid for, you didn't always want to use your Thale's rifle because it may not survive the trip. If they get rid of item quantity, it won't be the worst thing, but it will take away alot from the game's character that they will need to replace in some form. Maybe people will disagree with that last point, maybe I only feel that way because of EVE and how much the threat of material loss spiced up every moment of combat. |

i like the way they are starting, with everybody getting decent loadout to start with, and you unlock more variety as the game progresses according to the polygon article.
Half of those customizable fits people are complaining about losing are those crappy militia and basic fits. Most fits arent creative at all.
Everybody needs to be on a relatively even playing level. New players getting consistently crushed by proto gear was one of thhing that killed dust.
I am a bit worried about the free to play aspect of it.
I would much rather pay single price up front. Fund the game proper with some micro transactions of course. Not charge us SP boosters or warbarge-esqe components or skins at ridiculous prices, which in the long run as Dust showed us, becomes useless anyway.
without single player content that may be hard to ask for.
so far, i'm on board. the IP is going to live on, if not fully realized for another year or two.

Thanks Darth, the compiled list of links was very helpful.
I particularly liked the video footage of the demo being played, courtesy of Dannie Fleetfoot, linked in the Massively Overpowered article. Screen shots and concept art is one thing, but a bit of smart phone video footage goes a long way to show what it really looks like to play the demo.

Pokey Dravon wrote:Character Customization ...
OPINION: This is the one that worries me the most. The fitting system in DUST 514 was one of my most beloved parts and I enjoyed endless hours tweaking and perfecting the finest detail of a fit to get my optimal performance. Now while it doesnGÇÖt explicitly say itGÇÖs moving away from the classing EVE/DUST fitting system, it seems to me that itGÇÖs a much simpler version. I wonGÇÖt pass judgement on it until we see more of it, but I am very nervous about losing one of my favorite part of DUST. In general it sounds like theyGÇÖre moving away from a tiered base progression which IGÇÖm a personal fan of. It also sounds like theyGÇÖre moving towards a more solidified class based system where modifiers can be unlocked. In many ways it sounds similar to the system proposed by CCP Z for Project Legion which I was also not terribly fond of. Again I will have to see what it looks like exactly before I form a solid opinion./
My impression here is that instead of weak starter suits like new players had in DUST, Nova will start us in a loadout of the same quality as a vet would use, at least gear-wise, but limited to only 6 to 8 pre-made fits on day 1.
Then there will be some sort of unlocking mechanism (whether buying skills, or playing in a certain frame type, or whatever) which will allow you access to different weapons and modules. Once you have played long enough to unlock the weapons/equipment/modules you want, then you will have the same fitting freedom we had in DUST.
Some people seem to be interpreting the 32 roles mentioned as there just being 32 pre-made fits, but I am fairly sure that is wrong. I think the 32 roles just means 32 suits with unique suit bonuses. I am fairly sure that a vet in Nova will have close to the same fitting freedom they had in DUST.
As to the unlocks, I hope they don't structure it like CCP Z suggested. His tree did not make sense to me. I would prefer a flatter tree where a certain amount of game time in a suit type will unlock the base models of all the weapons types that can be used on that suit, then enough game time using a specific weapon will unlock access to variants of that weapon.
I am also hoping that Proficiency (described as getting better with a weapon the more you use it) does not just trigger unlocks. I am hoping that it also leads to bonuses. Where in DUST Proficiency was a skill you could buy with accumulated skill points that had 5 tiers that gave a bonus, I am hoping I am correctly interpreting that in Nova you will earn a Proficiency bonus through game time using the item, so the more you use an item the more effective your character will be with that item.
This would mean that after enough time to get used to the other mechanics of the game, a new player would be able to unlock a wide variety of weapons, but would only maximize their effectiveness with a weapon after using it for an extended period. It would make flavor of the month chasing a much slower process and would favor people who stick to a role they like over people who like to chase the shiny.

There are obviously some technical hurdles that need overcoming. Nova is more than likely going to be on Steam as its distribution method. In fact the demo running at FF was on a Steam client with the server in Frankfurt, not a LAN. So they'll be likely some sign up mechanism from Sony and being able to link it to steam account.
But this is all very early thinking and of course, dependant on Project Nova getting green lit.
A little tidbit there.
