" There are much grander plans for Project Nova thoughGÇöplans that donGÇÖt at all come through from this little arena shooter demo. The long-term vision for Nova is to get back to the Dust 514 dream, blending Nova together with EVE Online.
Not in real-time, per se. +ürnason says that only GÇ£one percent of one percentGÇ¥ of EVE Online players ever used the real-time feedback aspects of Dust. But the idea of the Planetary Conquest mode, wherein corporations battled for control of planets, is something +ürnason wants to resurrect in NovaGÇöand more.
GÇ£What IGÇÖd like to do is some sort of economic link,GÇ¥ says +ürnason. In this hypothetical situation, he sees a corporation in EVE Online and in Nova linking up, potentially by way of a structure created in EVE, and then hooking together so each side gets money or other resources. GÇ£That future is all an open map,GÇ¥ says +ürnason. GÇ£We can do whatever we want, after we demonstrate the correct shooting mechanics.GÇ¥
ItGÇÖs bottom-up development, and talking to +ürnason it seems like this is the opposite of DustGÇöa game that seemingly started with a grand plan but could never nail down the details. The downside: The demo here at Fanfest is not nearly as inspired, mainly because none of those big-picture details are in yet.
Which is not to say itGÇÖs bad. ItGÇÖs not! ItGÇÖs a perfectly fine twist on the arena shooter. But itGÇÖs clearly early days for development, and I have a feeling plenty of people will walk away from Nova this week feeling like itGÇÖs lacking a hook, a standout feature, not realizing that those are on the long-term roadmap. That's actually a really good article, and the focus from CCP on building up the -ahem- foundation for a great shooter first and foremost shows above all else that they've learned from the Dust 514 experience. I can't wait to see how this project evolves and hope we'll be seeing the vehicle play and focus on the immense depth that came from fitting options as they progress through development.
Good on you CCP Shanghai, I expect great things.

That is a really smart move. CCP needs to have a firm foundation with the game's performance first. A game with poor performance makes it difficult to make balance fixes and many other things.

Destiny has some of the best game performance and that games sh!t. It's a little concerning that every time I hear great performance that it's translating into a lobby shooter experience nowadays.

We have been yelling at them to fix gameplay first. I'm glad they're making it priority #1.
If all goes well, they'll make a good shooter first, and then expand on the rest.
Oh, and as for 6v6.
It's a TECH demo people. They didn't have fittings either. My money is on them leaving it out for demo purposes.
Vehicles are worrying though, I really hope they are included down the line. Combined Arms is my favorite thing in games.

I think if they get down to planetary level in the future, there is a good chance for vehicles.

It's a little concerning that every time I hear great performance that it's translating into a lobby shooter experience nowadays. Yeah the thing is CCP is not bungy. I know project nova will become bigger as time progresses. Right now instead of making huge promises like they did with dust they are heavily focusing in game play performance which to me is the biggest priority in an FPS game and any game in general. Once things are ironed out the rest of the content will surely come. Tanks, game modes, new weapons, new maps, suits, bigger fights. Whatever they want to add. If am wrong then too bad. But this seems the most logical way. There would be no point adding more content whilst losing players because of bad game performance. Something that happened here in dust as we saw with the release of uprising. Glad to see CCP acknowledging how important this is.

We've told them we want the original vision, and it appears that is what they have in mind.
Starting out by building a solid FPS foundation makes sense. We would be bitching if it was as sloppy as DUST is on the PS3.
They are of a practical mind for EO integration. Realtime integration both too difficult and too limiting. The architecture won't allow boarding of EO ships even if the players wouldn't freak out over the possibility. That leaves OB as the sole realtime interaction and that doesn't add much to either game. We have WB OB's that do the same job.
I like the economic link as that adds an MMO element that has been lacking.

I really disagree with the way they handle loadouts. It seems to be more like Battlefield or CoD where you chose your weapon and some perks, instead of actually equipping a dropsuit. The loadouts were one of the few things which actually worked in Dust and were incredibly fun to do.
At least they haven't written off the Eve Online interaction and PI.

This is the point of this exercise. Make the core game good, then add things into that core, tailoring them to fit the game, not just adding them for the sake of having them. Case in point: HAVs, would you rather have them be part of the initial tech demo just to have them? Or would you rather have them developed with the maps, the counters, the AV, and have them be a meaningful and useful, challenging part of the battlefield rather than random infantry harvester #3? I'd rather they had a role, a purpose and such that doesn't involve "killing people like infantry do, only better, and needing specific weapons to be killed back."

Core gameplay and rules should come first, battlefield support units should absolutely be added, but unless the core gameplay is good, the vehicle gameplay will wing up being sh*t anyway.

I was standing in the debriefing room with Rattati and Frame for a good while listening in to several groups giving feedback. It's been very positive so far with many describing it as very tight and precise.
The other thing is that this demo was not on a LAN or a server in the room, it was over the Internet. And there was no lag. So that's good.
They also had to cap the frame rate for the connection to work. The PCs were cranking it out at 200fps at max settings otherwise.

From a few of the videos that I've watched it looks quite fluid. If there's any way you could ask Rattati or Frame for some official correspondence (preferably posted here on the forms) that would be amazing. Any little thing, even about the "tiered recognition rewards", would be double-plus good, although that might be a tall order before FF is over. Glad to hear that the demo is well received though, and all the better to get the thing greenlit.

Vehicle gameplay was good 4+ ******* years ago, i had a purpose, i had tactics and variety when this game started, i had more than i do now.
Building an arena game does not work for vehicles, chalk and cheese and just because mechanics are good for infantry does not translate to vehicles.
A MMO needs to have everything, what about having an open map or 2 to be able to test vehicles against each other? Surly they had enough time to that?
They already have everything anyways in DUST so it cannot be too hard and they had the best part of a year if not longer to showcase something better than what we have now at least from the infantry side and even that is lacking and has been dumbed down.
Saying its a tech demo is a poor excuse, you either build something that is worth showing off or you dont bother at all.
