Just sayin'.
The graphics sucks but the concept was/is cool, actually, impressive for the time. The new project is the exact contrary as far as I can tell, which, again, is still not enough to "judge" a game, but i believe it's enough for at least a first impression.
First impression being: pretty good graphics (although, not the best I've ever seen by far) but also with a simplier fps arena concept: less MMO, more FPS. Not sure if this is what the community expected. I thought more of both would have been a good start to be honest, but this doesn't look the case.

I hear you but I can't help but feel it is apples and oranges.
EVE than and now attracted a "certain" type of person/gamer.
FPS attract a "certain" type of gamer.
With today's watered down genre of FPS, I feel like if you don't start off with a proper vision and selling point, it doesn't matter what you add down the road, it is immensely harder to capture that audience as they have seen ten new FPS release every month.

If you have an audience where 95% of them care only about EVE, you don't talk about much else...

Well I thought we would get more information. They said they would have the major content at the keynote and then have roundtables and etc afterwards.
