I know that at least 30% of Dust community don't want/need a gaming PC. Those who want a PC they are too afraid to build custom PC due to lack of practice/knowledge. 9 years ago I was in the same situation. I didn't wanted a gaming PC because I had PS2 and thats all I needed but god I was wrong.... My first gaming PC was based on AMD 6000+, 4 GB OCZ Reaper RAM(those were very sexy modules) and Gainward HD 4850 and I had absolute orgasm when I got that Crysis game.... I will never forget that feeling...
Let's get to the point. What do you need for PC?
1. CPU 2. Motherboard 3. Power supply 4. Computer case 5. Ram memory 6 Hard drive/ SSD 7. Graphic cards
Some bro advices:
1. You don't need 1000 bucks for nice PC, don't listen to those youtube idiots. 2. You need well balanced PC. You can't get Titan graphic card and dual core Pentium because that CPU will be huge bottleneck for GPU. 2. 8 GB of ram is optimal requirement for gaming PC. Forget the age of 4 GB 3. Anyone who says I7 is gaming CPU is a "waste of skin", everyone knows that CPU can't be used in full potential in 95% of games 4. Both Nvidia and AMD companies have their pros and cons, you will not mistake with any of them. 5. Google and Youtube are your best friends 6. NEVER buy branded PC, they're mostly overpriced piece of garbage 7. You can any tutorial about building your PC on Youtube.

I very much approve this message. Probably the best "move to PC" related thread out there aside from some of the budget build guides of course.
I would just like to add that a gaming PC does not mean there are liquid cooling tubes all over the place and everything else. Even the most basic of modern systems will run perfectly fine with stock cooling and no over clocking.
When you look up gaming PC and inevitably see that guy putting together a liquid cooling system just close it. That is not what building a gaming PC is all about. That is something for later on when you need to neck beard out and want to brag about your rig.

Questions as I am saving right now for a Gaming PC that can also handle plenty of video editing and work:
1. What do you mean by Bottleneck with CPU in relation to the GPU?
2. If $1000 isn't needed for a great rig, how much does your current one cost, and how often do you upgrade, as the new graphics cards are set to come out soon I've heard? Are you anticipating any price drops/ sales?
3. Thanks for inviting me to the PC Master Race lol :)
Also just a question for everyone, is Windows or Mac a better choice for gaming? Because I love Ios and it's apps like Garageband and all, but Windows seems to be the platform games love :(
I might have to get MacBook and leave all my gaming to the desktop...

Think of the flow of information like a river. If that river quickly narrows it causes the water to not flow properly. The same principle applies with your CPU and GPU being able to process the information that is being thrown at them and letting it flow out to something use able by you, the user.
Pricing for a new system is highly arguable just because requirements can vary even across what type of games you plan on playing. I would say that a 6 - 700 dollar PC can be good for about the next 2 years but is not going to be VR or 4k capable. It will easily handle 1080p @ 60 FPS for the majority of games out there right now. Future games may require you to set the graphics down a bit to maintain frame rates if you do not want to upgrade your graphics card. Personally I feel like if you want to be future proof for 4 - 5 years from day 1 you need to spend about $1200 but again that is very open to debate.
If you are doing a custom build and you are within a budget windows is pretty much the only choice. Currently you can get the OEM version of windows 10 pro for about $20 and put that on any computer where mac your only option is to buy a premade system.
I just finished up a computer that only cost me $200 to build that I am tempted to throw one of my graphics cards and windows in just to see what it is capable of. Note that that price is no GPU, no SSD (already had one), and no OS as its a home dev server and nothing else. |

1. Dual core CPU can't feed too powerful GPU, for example witcher 3, if you get in a massive battle and that situation requires big CPU power, you will get huge framedrop because dual core can't keep up with the GPU.
2. My rig costed me around 400 euros(maybe less). I have i3 4130, GTX 750Ti 2 GB DDR5, 8 GB of ram. You can buy cheapest motherboard if you don't plan to overclock. I would recommend mbo with B85 chipset.
3. You're welcome ;)
Mac and gaming can't get in the same sentence. I beg you, don't buy Mackbook... That's most overpriced **** I ever saw...

Some perpective, i3 such as skylake 6100 with gtx 750ti equals ps4, i3 with gtx 950/960 is better than ps4, i5, such as skylake 6500 with gtx 970 is a gaming beast way beyond ps4, along with price. Anything more is for people who just want to spend more money for the complete best, nothing wrong there.

There are so many considerations that go into choosing a PC, but the more informed you are about what you specifically need, the better your end result will be.
The best piece of advice I can give is to create a list of what you are getting the PC for, and perform a ranking.
The next item, budget, comes with a second factor most people don't talk about, which is time. Any electronics investment has a lifespan, and how you allot your budget can result in huge swings in value over time.
As an example, someone who is focused only on 1080p gaming today is best served by picking up a 970 as the pretty much optimal price/performance option. Will run every current title at ultra at solid framerates. As long as that person only gamed in 1080, they would get a good return on value over time. If they decided in 8 months that they want to step up to 2k or even 4k, then they would have been better served by spending a little bit more now and getting say a 390x or 980, which have the headroom to get good 2k performance , and when sli'd good 4k.
That same value applies to CPUs. If you are someone who has no interest in over clocking or water cooling, there is no benefit in spending the extra money on an unlocked multiplier on Intel's higher priced SKUs. If you know that you will absolutely water cool a year down the road, investing early in a well binned K series part will payout on extending the lifetime of your platform. The granularity of PC upgrading can really help you get a lot for small regular investments.
Motherboards are one of the places where knowledge of your long term goals is extremely beneficial. Knowing what features are must have versus preferred goes a long way here. Given the wide array of chipsets and manufacturers, you can do either a world of good or hurt to your overall plan here more than anywhere else. Think long term here as well. If you are looking towards 4k and sli, getting a board with only a single 16x PCIe slot isn't going to serve down the road when you add the second card.
Finally, a word of caution if you are buying in the next two months, AMD is on the verge of putting out a new line of cards that will hopefully bring down there sky high power consumption. Given the problems with the 970 at 4k because of the VRAM issue, I would wait out the next gen of cards from AMD in the late spring if you can and are in the 400-600 range.

I bought a solid gaming PC for around $650 at a discount during the Reboot InfoGamer event in Zagreb, Croatia last year.
Only problem is, It didn't come with a fan to force the hot air out of the case so I'm still looking for one that would fit. The screw holes for the back fan placement are 105mm apart and I don't know which size fan would fit properly. Help? There's no 105mm fan, just 90mm and 120mm, at least in my country's online stores...

So 850 US dollars? A single 980 ti costs 650 USD and won't hit 30 FPS in BF4 at 4k on ultra.

Maybe he means full HD (1080P) Not ultra hd (4K), maybe he trolling, or perhaps he is telling the truth, i'm afraid you will never know. On a serious side note prices are differnt here in the UK to the States, they are always changing, and for -ú600 pounds you can indeed build one beastly rig, but for sustained 4k, no, unless you lower alot of graphical settings, let's face it, pc high settings vs ultra is usually marginal difference and not worth the extra load.

Hi, I'm very interested into getting into the big boys of pc gaming with a good rig. I'm currently going with some old gigbyte and nvidia parts from a few years ago. I'm looking to make a new rig that can play game like dying light on high settings for around 500-600 dollars. I'd like to make it a cpu-gpu based build with the 970 as my gpu. For Ram I'm just going to stick with a simple 8gb of DDR3. Any help or possible builds would be very helpful. Oh for what I'd like to see. I'm fine with anything in the 720p to 1080p. I'm going to be using an asus monitor that can support all 3 formats, DVI,HDMI,VGA.

for those building right now WAIT unless there is a game you really want to get on.
AM4 sockets with DDR4 support are right around the corner. Even if you are planning an intel based system this should lead to a drop in the price of DDR4 thanks to wider marketing capabilities.
Even if you prefer to stick with DDR3 and an FX based chip we should see some of those motherboards and the DDR3 ram go on sale to make room for the shiny new stuff that neck beards like myself will be buying up so we can stroke our e-peens. |
