Now that my ban has run out, I'd like to recap my experience with CCP and Dust514; As well as share my thoughts on it's past, present, and future.
First of all, I've been playing EVE since 2008. I've seen this world evolve into the beast it is today. EVE-Uni gave me my fresh start in PVP and overall, how the world works. When I learned of CCP's plan to launch a fps as an expansion of the universe, I was hyped. Even more so when I learned it would be released for the PS3, because I had a brand spankin' new one ready to go. I was one of those who tested the closed beta, back when there was only a couple weapons, 4 suits, and just one game mode where attackers assault the base to shut down null cannons to give the MCC time to dock with the base while the defenders tried to destroy it. In my opinion, that game mode was the most fun of them all, shame it never made it out of the beta.
Since then throughout the open beta and the full release, I dabbled in sniping, knifing, shotgunning, logistics, anti-vehicle, each had it's ups and downs, some unbalanced of course. I had fun until my controller gave out late last year in October I think, when the #PortDust514 movement took off.
Though I would have enjoyed playing this new reimagining of Dust on the PS4, I think it's best that the PC be it's platform. Graphics aside , it would simply be easier to manage and there wouldn't be any worries about next gen consoles. CCP will have to deal with script kiddies and hackers, yes. But I'm sure they'll find a way. What's important is that there is a future, like the Phoenix, it will rise again and it will be glorious...I'll still have to save up to fix my PC and upgrade it. I wonder if it'll be easier to just go pan for gold.
Now that the sunshine and milk chocolate smiles are spent and the baby giggling is fading in the distance; Let's end the emotional piano music with Paul Bunyan's massive double bladed axe, and take a step back and look at those big, ugly cons.
We'll start with the reason Dust was released on the PS3 to begin with, "We don't want to cannibalize our playerbase". It was confusing not just to EVE players but to every gaming news site that reported on it. But we went along with it because of the potential to grow a new playerbase in the console world. That and we were high on the future vision that looked to just over the horizon. So what happened to this excuse? I'm sure the reasons are obvious but I'd still like to know what led CCP to reconsider.
Next. The game has been a balancing act since the closed beta. Every balance called for a rebalance, and every rebalance caused an imbalance that had to be balanced by rebalancing something else. It's been a mess.
Finally, we get to the Rouge Wedding. And from the looks of it, there's still plenty of people who feel like they're being stabbed. And they every right to feel that way. Many don't have the money nor the desire to get a gaming PC, and many feel used. After the fanfest that announced Project Legion, CCP was bombarded with console rage. This led them to go silent. But that only led console players to believe that the game could still be ported to the PS4. After all, Project Legion wasn't even greenlit yet so there was hope. Albeit, a false hope. But CCP didn't let these players know that a PS4 port was still out of the question throughout the whole silence. So the naive players still spent their money, they still committed their time. All for a game they didn't know they would never play, and this is what angers them now. I admit, I didn't want CCP to release info on the platform for the new game, that was until I learned how many were still hopeful for a PS4 port.
They've been screwed over, there's no gentle way to put it. CCP had every chance to prevent the console players from wasting time and money they would soon regret spending, but CCP remained silent.
There's a glorious future for Dust on the PC and I look forward to being apart of it. But the fact remains, console players had to be screwed to get the game to where it's going. The best we can do is honor and remember them.
