We've all heard it. Dust will die when the PS3 no longer has online support, but what does "online support" actually mean? Im my experience with Apple, no longer providing support just meant no more software updates. I can still use my 3rd gen I pod's basic functions, but I can no longer get updates for its apps. Will Sony really go to the trouble of changing their servers to be PS3 proof, or are we just no longer getting software updates? Dose anyone have proof that Sony dose in fact plan to make the PS3 flat out unable to connect to the internet in 2016?

From past experiences with Playstation, "online services" just means PSN. Usually they'll stop with updates, start to close some game servers, shutdown PS store, and then everything within PSN. But there no knowing what exactly will be the process on the console side, what I described was from their portable part.

A lot of the time when something isn't supported, it is referring to the servers games are played on. If servers for a game don't exist, then you can't play the game.
On PC, this often results in 3rd parties or private individuals maintaining a server just for that game.
I don't think that is possible on Sony systems, and I know sometimes companies won't allow private servers to uses the product even if they will no longer supply the servers.
This does not apply to games or game modes able to be played offline.

Online support means being able to access the internet. Once that's gone, we're doomed.

But the question is, would they do it to such w successful new era system? I'm ok with stopping the updates, but not the Internet.
As long as the servers are up, I shall play.
I remember when they killed the Socom Confrontation servers. I still have the disc but it's literally useless because you can't play the game anymore -_-

Yes, Sony plans to disconnect the PSN servers for PS3 as that is a whole group of servers they must maintain independent of the PS4 PSN servers.
No there is no set date, it does not matter what people say. Sony was very clear in the fact that as long as they were not losing money on it they would keep the network available to PS3 players. Anyone giving any set date is just a nay sayer or they have been misinformed by a nay sayer.
Merry Christmas.
Happy any holiday you celebrate.
Lets all enjoy a New Year that is literally just around the corner.

That's what I think too, although it's not really clear-
Looks like ps3 and ps4 don't use the same server (not sure tho), so I think it will be a useless extra cost for Sony to maintain an "obsolete" service for more than one/two year. It will go down one day or the other, anyway.

It means, when you can no longer sign into PSN VIA ps3 because they have stopped online support for the servers that handle all the ps3 online content.
Though I don't see why they would shut it down with so many people still using and accessing it, at least for a good while to come.
