With Christmas coming up, I was thinking about upgrading my PS3 with a cheap SSD. I use Netflix and Hulu primarily along with playing Dust and the occasional other games.
I can't imagine getting much improvement out of a SSD given my usual applications are video streaming services, but has anybody else noticed a worthy improvement in load times or menu speed on either games or apps?

Load times do improve a bit, but it depends on the game as well. In some cases its minor, in some cases its dramatic.
Dust I find more improvement than any other game, though this has to do with how incredibly flawed its design was.
This is a positive and endearing message brought to you by Himi.

I test Destiny too. In PvP you can count on SSD. In PvE - depends how fast you travel and how many enemies are around. Just little bit smoother.
Not much time left...

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. It sounds like it helps overall so we will see. I plan on having my ps3 for a while and not upgrading to the 4, so I might end up putting a few bucks into it.

I used to play DCUO a lot and people ith a SSD used to have a much better experience than all others thanks to it ^^ All time lost accessing the HDD are decreasing drastically.
Port it now !

Definitely improves Dust's performance and time to actually get your feet on the ground. I'm usually always spawned in first and can get a lot of distance between me and the main group spawning in.
I use Netflix and Hulu every night and I cant say theres any difference there.
Any PS processes like corrupt file checks are 50x faster. Used to take about 1 minute to complete the check now its done in literally 5 seconds. |

Pretty much what's been said above, it really does vary from game to game depending on how much data they feel necessary to store on the HDD. The general system is much faster to run/boot etc and I remember seeing a web review somewhere a couple of years ago where they were running a bunch of games side by side to see the difference. 80% showed very little difference (including some that you'd think would like Fallout 3) but some (GT5 especially I think) showed a remarkable improvement.
Dust by all accounts, as you know, does. Personally I'm probably just slowly melting my PS3 with a big 7200rpm drive. |
