When I spawn into a match in Dust, I'm usually the first person on the ground and running to the objective. Before it would take 5-10 extra seconds to properly render everything and finally get moving. Buying an SSD was the best decision I've made for Dust/PS3. Plus when PS3 goes extinct you can still use the SSD in a PC or external hdd setup. Definitely worth it!

If you plan on going to the PS4 maybe go with a 250 gb so you can move it into your PS4 when the time is right. S**T SANDWICHES ONLY 1000 ISK. DON'T MISS OUT.

The Slim does not have a SATA drive only a built in 12 GB flash which is essentially the same as the SSD. I am just making sure that I am not better off with the internal memory than with the SSD. It pretty easy to go either way as it takes less than 20 minutes to change the setup and load the files. So the question is not SSD vs SATA in a slim, but is instead SSD vs Flash in an ultra slim.

I've been resisting buying an SSD to upgrade my PS3 because as far as I'm concerned CCP should design the game to work on the standard hardware. But, just recently, as a result of this thread, I thought perhaps there's something we aren't considering. Perhaps the latest standard hardware is actually capable of running the game without a problem? The SuperSlim PS3 has no magnetic hard drive - it's basicly a 12GB flash drive - an SSD. Buying an SSD would cost a considerable amount, probably a couple of hundred dollars. But looking into the matter, I discovered that the SuperSlim PS3 is being refurbished and sold by EB Games for something like $125 AUD. I though ti would be a worthwhile investment to actually buy one of these and see how it performed. I did that yesterday and installed the game, but didn't really get a chance to play it until today. What I discovered was astounding - there's just no lag, even on the "city" map. It tries to lag the way I expect it to, but all that happens is a momentary freeze or jerkiness and then it frees up again - the flash memory drive is fast enough to be able to catch up with demand. I'm sure adding an SSD to a 12GB SuperSlim PS3 would add storage space to the console, and that's obviously worth it, but I'm pretty sure that there is no need to do this to eliminate disk lag.

Any 7200 rpm HD with an internal cache will perform 2 seconds slower(at worst and sometimes better than) on spawn onto the MCC-tested/verified with a corpmate. The ps3 will only spin it ar 5400rpm, but it can be repurposed later and you'll save a lot and get a ton more storage.

Side-by-side comparison shows him getting into matches slightly faster than me (0 - 3 second increase) and loading into his merc quarters faster. He also doesn't have menu lag like I do. But........ As far as gameplay performance, it is not even noticable. We lag the same, spawn into the game the same (0 second tease exists on superslim), and pretty much everything else is the same. Even when we don't play in the same room and we chat over skype, we still have the same lag and spawn timer fun. [#makeDustwheelchairaccessible]

It's only when lag sets in that the SuperSlim 12GB with its flash drive is superior. You can see the effect of the lag starting to set in. Then it just doesn't. Impressive. If anyone is considering an SSD and has the option to get one of these refurbished machines instead, you get a later version PS3 with flash drive, and it solves all the problems an SSD would. Granted the 12GB is a drawback, but there's no game that would use more than that. If you're happy to delete games once you've played them, this is a good machine.
