"Fellow Mercs!
CCP Rattati here to inform you of the latest changes to matchmaking. Since the introduction of the New Player Academy, we have been experimenting with its duration and the graduation threshold of new players into the general population, trying to make sure that they have learned whatGÇÖs necessary before tackling the more difficult challenges of DUST 514. For many players this is a difficult transition, and in many cases, overwhelmingly frustrating.
In order to make this transition easier, we have added a secondary layer to the matchmaker using an ELO (True Skill) methodology, where a playerGÇÖs natural skill is predicted by numerical value, based on their wins and losses. To be absolutely certain, we have taken the steps to correlate this value with a number of skill ratios, such as KDR (Kill Death Ratio) and WP/D (War Points per Death Ratio), and finally W/L (Win Loss Ratio) and are certain of the systemGÇÖs merit.
We have also taken steps to make sure that veterans with secondary characters do not enter the Academy again, to minimize the skill disparity between players.
We are also happy to report that the Standard Deviation of Skill, within each battle has reduced dramatically, by over 50%. That means that the spread of skill has reduced for every battle, high skill players fighting high skill players, and vice versa, greatly reducing the number of battles where new players are up against unfair odds.
Combined with the Teambuilder logic improvement added last fall, we are certain that our Public Contracts battles are now as balanced as possible, where players are matched on skill after getting the necessary training and protection in the Academy. These results are based on multiple before-and-after analyses on per-team battle statistics, such as: War Points, ISK Destroyed, Average and Sum of Skill, as well as the Remaining Clones and MCC health of the winning team. All these statistical deltas or differences should be reduced if teams are balanced, and so far, they are all lower than before.
We also added a few configurable attributes, and will continue to tweak and hone them over time to make for an even better experience for all players.
See you in Battle, mercs!"
Sounds dandy, if its really working that well. But it obviously doesnt mention anything about filling uneven games or balancing teams.
Does anyone know if in early versions of Dust there was ever a switch team button?
I feel like that could be an easy and quick fix to help games right now, as long as the code or programming doesnt have to be made up from scratch... Thats why i ask if it ever existed.
Implementing a switch team button that only allows for switching onto the less populated team would be huge. I think everyone is sick of uneven games and therefore you'd see lots of players willing to switch over.
If you cant get your matchmaking to fill uneven games effectively, at least allow players to switch teams. Put certain restrictions like you cant switch if your team has less players, you can only switch X amount of times per game (if team numbers drop back and forth) and no switching if teams are even. You keep your WP/KDR stats when switching.
Perhaps award switching players a few WP? Like 25 or 50 points for switching teams. And maybe in that case each player can only switch teams 1 time.

See, Rattati's view of matchmaking was pretty fine by itself at that time. Balance teams by their fits stats. What he didn't know about at that time was the hemorragy of battle leavers.
Some players have an MU so high that they would be put against a whole squad to match theirs.
In the high MU player's list will there be starter noobs, that will just complement the team.
Same on the other side. Now if the High MU players get's owned constantly by the squad, he will be pissed and leave.
His team will then only be noobs and we can start to see how hard it is to regulate matchmaking at this state in the game.
Although matchaming leaves it's impact a lot more on domination type game modes ( Acq, Skirmish , Ambush )
But you know, I play skirmish 95 % of the time, a vast majorities of the matches I play are balanced, as all the players that play this mode are experienced. The only downside of skirmish is that you play the same people. It is literally everyday vs Calmacht, Iberica,Honor Alliance, b.l.u.e s.t.a.r. Rarely do I see new names.

Its impossible to make fair matches because it has to come from the players itself. There are too many customizations to balance to make the game balanced
For a FPS this game has the best concept for a great game but it is short sighted because players have to make it better. No one wants a earned kill. They want it cheap and easy.

I have actually been having really balanced doms lately, some of the best matches I have ever played, right down to the last ticks.

So true .
But I don't know about the customizations and balancing part .
Warframe does a nice job at it and that game is so far beyond Dust 514 it's comical even though it's more along the same concept , just done better and actually playable .
Teamwork is really important - said the Tyrannosarus Rex from Kung Fury .

Edit : They need to incorporate an actual matchmaking system and stop trying to skirt around the issue of not having one . What you stated at the end is oh so true and is one of the problems of this game . Here is what i mean by balance and customization. So you start in one type of fitting but that fitting is only good against certain other fitting. Since the tide of battle changes so much you have to constantly change fittings to keep on top of your game.
To maximize your role you need other players to support your fitting but the other players need the right fitting to make it all work. Not everyone has every fitting to counter every situation and thats why balance is not achieved.
So in short a lot of customization makes it hard to achieve balance on the battlefield.
