120gb Kingston SSD for $39.99, free shipping from Newegg. Gonna back up and install this sucker today, will report on before and after impressions.
Is it true I need to download the latest PS3 OS onto a USB drive then load that into the new SSD once it's installed? |

You should notice an improvement in FPS on certain maps as well as less texture pop-in.

Works wonders, Ari and I used them before we quit..it was the only way to deal with laggy corps in PC..people say they don't help with lag but I experienced little to no lag after getting one..but I quit before the last update so idk how bad or good lag is now.. You'll load into matches faster, but delete all mail and contacts that'll help as well o7

Cool, thanks! Some people recommended doing a database rebuild after installing everything. Anyone know of any other tips?

Someone mentioned it earlier... delete any emails you can and reduce your contact list to all but the most important people. I also try to limit my chat channels to 4, max.

I'm not sure if different models of PS3 have different hardware but mine can barely run Dust. I've had to drop the graphical settings because the video lag and stuttering became so terrible.
Slow loading times, lots of graphical artifacts and many lock ups or hard freezes. My current gaming standard for Dust is pretty low so installing the SSD can probably only bring my experience up.
Backing up my data, downloading the PS OS and waiting on my SSD to arrive then I'll post up my initial impressions. Everyone sings their praise so hopefully I'll find myself in a similar experience! |

I read that you did have to download OS and do as you say there but when I put mine in it worked straight away.
If you are using super slim you need a bracket http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FFB01I0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Physical removal of PS3 HDD was easy as pie, install of the SSD was also a breeze. Updating and restoring my data now, I'll be online in less than an hour. There the true test awaits! |

Never defrag your SSD, that's the only thing you MUST NOT do. The rest can be undone, but never defrag it.

So I got everything up and running - loaded into the warbarge lobby and then black screened loading into game. What a great start!
The file check went amazingly fast though. Literally under 5 seconds.

Trying again... OMG- that's where you just say, "thank you CCP", and reset your console, restart the game. The exact same my have happened to me when I'm installed my SSD. You should notice a good, not earth shattering, improvement though not the god mode/master race difference some jest about on this thread. You'll def be on the map before at least 14 people every battle now though...

Well I played my first game with the SSD. And I've got to say the hype is REAL! Everything ran so much smoother and maybe it's just me but the game looked better. Perhaps this freed up some system resources that were bottlenecking gpu quality or performance.
Either way I am STOKED! It was totally worth the $40. I suggest anyone that has $ to spare buy an SSD NOW! Even after PS3 goes extinct you'll have a spare SSD drive for whatever. |

The reduced texture pop-in makes the game look better, if that's what you care about. And people are not lying when they say you load into matches 5+ seconds faster than everyone else.

Is that true, bacuase i do not want mess something up :p First generation SSDs were expected to die sooner than HDDs. The jury is still out on that since manufacturers don't accurately report their failure numbers. Tech improves over time and SSDs have been on the market for years now. Just make sure you register your warranty and you are fine.
For what it is worth, I have an SSD in my PS3 and have for months. There has been no decrease in performance or strange behavior (e.g. error messages, crashes, etc.).

Well, as you'll swap the HDD for the SSD, you'll lose the data on your HDD. Maybe you can transfer saves (directly or through the ps+) but I've never looked into that. You'll have to download and install all your games again ^^

Ssd chips can be written thousands of times before cell failure. your system reads it often but rarely writes. Even when cell failure occurres there are excess cells in the harddrive to pick up the slack, so you are unlikely to even notice.

I only spent $40 for a Kingston 120gb SSD. I noticed a huge difference in performance, as my game ran horribly. The $ value compared to the performance benefit was totally worth it to me. It's almost like I'm playing a different game.
On top of that, when the PS3 goes extinct, you have an SSD for whatever. Get an external hard drive reader and you can use it for any PC.
Seriously it's a night and day difference. Maybe my HDD was on its last legs, because my game ran like ****. Now it's smooth as butter. |
