CCP's logic was that it would allow non-PC players to participate in the New Eden universe. That was an admirable goal. Unfortunately, they chose the console that has the weirdest OS and is on it's way out of the market.

It was a decent idea back when they first started working on it probably in 2008 (first glimpse trailer was from 2009). It made sense to grow the player base to CCP. "Console players prefer arcade type games, where don't play super marathon games like EVE. So let's get them interested in New Eden with a shooter!" The problem is that the game took a long time to make and the "next cutting edge tech" was a leviathan waiting in the wings. Thus, when 514 is officially released on 5/14/13 the PS4 was already making the game 'obsolete.'

I think the decision to go with console comes from the idea that console players and PC players are just totally alien creatures to one another that can only communicate with gestures, pheromones, and the occasional fecal urgency. There is also the greed potential of "we can get MORE people with consoles!" rather than "we can ensure that every EVE player at least downloads DUST."

Or, because CCP was doing the same thing with World of Darkness based on the articles I read, they kept trying to innovate and come up with totally new stuff that would get CCP all the recognition. "CCP creates sister FPS for EVE online on the PC" doesn't sound as completely sexy as "CCP to link consoles and PC players for the first time ever." Now that Warthunder and other games have, are, and will do it in the future, it isn't nearly as sexy.

Hell, Extra Credits went on about how much potential this entirely new way of playing had.

For my money, morte, just like literally everything else with Dust, the concept (in this case, to put it on a console) was sound, but the implementation beyond incompetent.

PS3 hardware took far too much blame than it deserved, plenty of developers managed (And still do) to squeeze pretty good performance out of it.

Hey, Joseph! I like your theory a lot! Well said!!
...And probably very true or near to it.

I don't believe CCP was incompetent at all in trying to execute the way the did. LOL, we consolers show more hayseed mindset in our trial of a game like this than any dev could.

The only design crime they may have committed is in the apparent compulsion of the first crew to make this function like a genetic "you look just like your mom did when she was born" clone-framework of Eve-Online.

This second crew has had more success because they realized Jr doesn't need to work just like Sr.... Dust works better in the areas where we separate from EVE a little and take our transportation to get to the same party.

Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
