Wish we a had a derivative market to invest ISK in ... maybe base it around anticipated demand for given items.
Say, for instance, you had a billion ISK to invest the day that Aeon Amadi and Sgt Kirk got elected to CPM2. You anticipate (obvious, I know) that ARs and GA Assaults will be in for an imminent buff and will experience a subsequent spike in demand. So on that day, you take a big bet and invest your billion ISK in call options for Assault G/1 (expiration in 90 days).
Here we are today. It's the end of October, and right on time the demand for Assault G/1 is through the roof. Your billion ISK investment -- should you choose to cash in -- is now worth a whopping 2.5 billion! Do you hold onto it for a few more days? Will your investment gain even more value as you get closer to your contract's expiration? Or do you cash it in now and call it a day? Decisions, Decisions!
:: You kick yourself ::
You could've also bet that demand for Amarr Assaults would be in decline on the hunch that ScRs were overperforming. You could've made even more return if you'd have bought a butload of put options on Assault Ak.0s.
Talk about fun, right!?

I like the idea, but I think it would be hard to implement and police.
Would we be investing through an NPC, like a bookie?
The richest and most forumy of warriors would know before anyone else that "such and such" a buff will lead to "such and such" being OP or UP, and invest their wealth accordingly. People would jump on the bandwagon and potentially drive down prices before they ever even took off. That does make for an intriguing concept though...
How would we police the CPM and powers that be from being the main investors in things they have advanced knowledge of? How about their alts? Do they go to jail like Martha Stewart, or get a 6 month ban?
This could actually lead to a really fun sub game though. Like betting on or against the Orange Crop in Trading Places.

Just spitballing, but what if this was a service offered similar Jara? Another hologram purchasable for Aurum, that gives you better deals, and "insider tips" with investments in the market? This feature would be implemented for free of course, but have expanded features and better returns if you purchase the agent. Let's call him Jorto Juvovinen. You could have Jara and Jorto in your Merc quarters while you're away doing the nasty and finding you the best deals while you're gone.

Love it! And Jorto could be upgraded!
Jorto Level 0: 12 month usage rates (just like dust.thang.dk's historical graphs) Jorto Level 1: 12 month usage rates, filterable by specific item type (i.e. usage distribution for given class) Jorto Level 2: 12 month usage rates, filterable by specific item type and battle type (i.e. Pub, FW, PC) Jorto Level 3: 12 month kill/spawn data, filterable by specific item type and battle type Jorto Level 4: 12 month usage rates of active CPM members Jorto Level 5: Current derivative market trade volumes
Jorto could be dispatched to "fetch" market intel on a delayed basis (to prevent server strain). For instance, send Jorto off to find out what assault dropsuits are currently trending in PC. Processing takes 10-15 minutes, so you play a round of pewpew. When you return to MQ, Jorto will be waiting with his report in hand, complete with pretty graphs for your viewing pleasure.

And Jorto can juggle one contract per level.
A Level 0 Jorto does not support market speculation A Level 1 Jorto can juggle a maximum of 1 option contract (a put or a call) A Level 2 Jorto can juggle a maximum of 2 option contracts (two puts, two calls, or one of each) Etc ...
(so much potential!)

I like it. Provided it could be kept somewhat fair and real insider information not abused - enforcement does seem like it would be a major challenge.
It'd be nice to have something else to think about besides restocking while I wait for battles to queue up. I'm not sure how derivative put/call options work though on things that can't be traded through a player market. Is this only for player-tradeable items you are talking about? Hopefully more and more items will be tradeable soon! |
