* Trim maps beyond the redline; why render miles and miles of unused terrain? * Convert socketed maps to fixed maps. * Reduce map sizes and/or active regions (like this. - Stefan Stahl) * Powercores. * Downgrade graphics and effects. * Decrease player counts per match. * Remove "Select Battle Server" toggle; group players by region and/or ping. * Mandate Push-to-Talk when in battle. * Assign a subscription limit to player channels. * Consolidate queues.
Some of these things would kinda blow, but they would arguably blow less hard than lag and framerate drops. What ideas am I missing, ladies and gents? What other ways might we save memory, reduce lag or improve performance?

I'm down with graphics downgrade. I'd shoot non textured cubes for all I care as long as I have a stable 30 fps

I would like the game to go back to Chromosome then add the old tanks back and Logi Dropships. Dont tell me that isn't possible because some players have the old tanks in their assets.
Judge my muscle content then I'll judge you by your Half Marathon time. Never underestimate runners - "Jim"

Im not quite sure if servers removal will do less lag. Honestly im EU with B+ ping on cca 120mb cable. Without EU server i will have propably 250/400ms (d/f) ping when i will be on US server.
Decrease player count XD We already have like 12 players :D I dont know if destinization will be progress here XD
No boyko not these at all. CCP need optimizate, not desolate ;) |

Look at a similar game that runs well (or at least better) on the ps3. BF4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgfcLuYKBCE (probably best to mute it, the guy talks about BF4 looking the way it does because of the 'hard drive' aka the console as a whole)
- The textures on unimportant static objects are very low quality no matter how close you get to them. - The lighting & shadows seem much simpler. - Very basic, if any, anti-aliasing
I'm sure there's more there but that's what stuck out to me.
Something is killing new player retention.

Not even all of the suits have been converted to to skins meaning there are still models taking up tons of memory. I would say that puts us far from being at a limit when it comes to optimizations.
I fully agree with trimming outside of the red line. I envision this working as something like a giant "green screen" bubble over the maps which would allow 2d models to be applied keeping a similar visual effect to now while removing any models out side of a certain range.
I do not agree with the rest of the suggestions. I see only damage to overall game play or things that require far more time than the benefit they would give.
I would like to add to the list a "smoothing" of terrain.
Shading of those odd little channels in the ground on many hill sides can not be good for the PS3 graphics processing specially when you look at the variances in sky boxes. Those channels in the ground are also horribly annoying when you get stuck in them and have a pretty negative effect on game play. |
