What it means for Dust to have it's proxy node moved from it's own "4 x IBM HS22 - Intel X5687 @ 3.60GHz with 24GB RAM (1333MHz)" over to sharing "6x IBM x240 - Intel E5-2667 v3 CPU @ 3.2GHz with 128GB (2133MHz)" with Eve?

it doesn't mean much of anything, the proxy is already shared it's all on one server
the general consensus is that we will have more space to run dust on server side
but since there isn't much else we know about how dust in general works it may not mean anything
something that may happen tho is decreased latency due to new developments that are being worked on with said system

I don't even know what a proxy node is or does but from the devblog I'm pretty sure I can see the Dust and Eve ones are separate at the moment.

As can you see here http://content.eveonline.com/www/newssystem/media/68643/1/8.png
this is about 'EDGE ROUTING' and "LOAD BALANCING' thing. If we be moved to bigger and closer to core proxy that can means two things:
- less 'hops' at connections to TQ -> less lag - Dust as less important thing goes integrated with 'whole thing' and our 'dedicted' serverd goes to junkyard ;), because CCP need Aurum from electronics to pay electric bils for Dust.

Cheers for that. Would it be fair to say that the proxy node is the thing that actually runs matches server-side, or is it the thing that manages our connection to the the thing that runs the matches?

Try think about node as little server for matches.
Eve uniwerse is big :) so all is divided by nodes that manage few solar systems (in general ;) More populated systems get own dedicated node (like Jita) or when you need HUGGEEEeee... battle (simply petiton to CCP - we need solid ground for BIG fight)
For now we use dedicated node/s for DUST, so it is easier for us but probably introduce more chaos from CCP server side
Now: DUST514 Proxy Node 4 x IBM HS22 - Intel X5687 @ 3.60GHz with 24GB RAM (1333MHz)
EVE Proxy Node 5 x IBM HS23 - Intel E5-2643 0 @ 3.30GHz with 64GB RAM (1600MHz)
In future: DUST514 Proxy Node will be intedraded as EVE 'better' proxy Node 6x IBM x240 - Intel E5-2667 v3 CPU @ 3.2GHz with 128GB (2133MHz)
What this will do? We can be at every corner of Eve universe :) PC all over!
It is good news? DUST WILL BE LIVE!!!.. CCP integrated us more ... :) DREAM and VISION will be continued! Time for SPACE BOARDING WILL COME! Aleluja!!!
Not much time left...

Oh wow it just made sense. The proxy servers handle the out of battle stuff and the Eve-Dust link. We have battleservers for running the actual... wait for it... battles.

its a proxy server, it only routes traffic further into the network.
it most likely means almost nothing for the player, probably less routing steps.
in short, you wont notice a difference. |
