Ok i just downloaded the game yesterday. And im not very impressed with the game, the graphics are fine a little laggy at times but my huge issue is the fact i cant kill anyone. my beginer stuff just cant even touch most of the players on this game.
Outside of spending months of getting shot to hell all day long to gain the skill points necessary to be able to kill one person with a clip instead of shooting the clip into there back then when you reload then turn around you and flick you so you die. |

Add me to your contacts and message me tomorrow. I can put you in with a couple other new guys that started in the last couple weeks, and as a squad you will find it much easier. I can also help you figure out how to not waste your SPs and ISK. The NPE is tough right now, but it is not as bad with a little help. |

Yeah, that's a thing that happens. Don't worry, damn near every single person who has played the game spent their SP poorly early on.
What's your preferred playstyle for shooters? Do you like getting up into the enemy's face, do you like getting the drop on them, do you prefer to play a support role, do you enjoy suppression, do you prefer close or long range, do you prefer mobility or tank, etc.
It's happened once or twice someone couldn't pay the price, and I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals.

Ok, wall of text incoming. I'm pretty sure I will miss something so bear with me.
This game is VERY fitting-centric. Every single dropsuit in the game is fully customizable at all levels.
There are several attributes you need to be aware of on your dropsuit at first.
CPU and Powergrid are actually two of the most important, those yellow bars you see that go up and down when you change stuff actually determine how many things (and how powerful) you can put on a suit.
The starter fits are all militia grade template fits, AKA the worst suits in the game. Once you get out of the "Battle academy" these fits don't hold up well in what some of us call the shark tank.
SP is what you use to unlock more powerful dropsuits, modules and weapons to fit on your dropsuit. The skills you learn apply bonuses to your suits with synergy.
The best way to start is to pick a race and a specialty and stick to it religiously.
If as a starter race you chose Gallente or Amarr, your fits are armor-centric. Your shields are less critical of a concern in combat.
If you chose Minmatar or Caldari, your shields are your primary defense. Armor is secondary. Minmatar also tend to be the fastest.
If you choose not to take Blaizen up on joining his corp to learn, here is the quick and dirty recommendation:
Choose a dropsuit frame skill and get it to 3, choose a weapon and get it to three (I do NOT recommend heavy dropsuits as a starter choice at all).
Read the skill descriptions carefully. your choices matter.
Dropsuit Electronics and Dropsuit Engineering upgrade your CPU and PG respectively. I recommend both to three ASAP.
If you chose amarr or gallente, the armor skills are critical, and I recommend them to 3 each to start ASAP.
If you chose the caldari or minmatar I recommend them to 3 ASAP.
This is a fast and dirty Skill plan, not an in-depth one, but it should get you started.
I HIGHLY recommend joining a corp, if not one offered by a player, DUST University is a Newbie Training Corporation, run by people who care about helping new players.
This game isn't like any other, and requires a certain amount of intestinal fortitude and patience. But we (The CPM) are working on improving the New Player Experience by giving the Developers feedback.
Good luck.

Unfortunately your problem of not being able to kill anyone will remain until you can run better gear and have more SP.
BUT
as other people have said, if you run in a squad you'll be able to contribute in other ways and are more likely to enjoy some success. There is a squad finder in-game - jump in a squad, let people know you're new and sooner rather than later you'll find some people willing to let you tag along.

Battle academy is where you spend your first few matches against other players. It's not horribly obvious. The only warning most new players get that they were in a protected mode goes kinda like:
1st Match: I'm doing ok, this is new but I'm not getting trashed.
2nd Match: Still doing Ok. I think I'm doing better,
3rd match: What do these warpoints mean? I'm actually doing pretty good!
4th match (or once you've hit 1000 Warpoints) "Sweet jesus what the hell is happening to me???"
WoW has taught me that Purple means Legendary. This means Quafe suits are the optimal loadout for killing all of you.

Definitely not an out of the ordinary experience. This game is by far the most complex FPS I've ever played and EVE is the most complex game I've ever played period. That being said, this is my favorite FPS because of the depth. You can create a loadout to cater to any play style.
Hang in there it gets easier with SP. I found in the current state of the game, that dropping uplinks was the easiest way to average 8-10k SP per game. They aren't so great at the militia level but upgrading to Uplink Deployment III in your skills will get you access to the R-9 Uplink. You can carry 6 of them, have two deployed at the same time and they can spawn up to 9 clones. Each spawn yields 25 warpoints, if both your uplinks get fully used, that's 450 war points. And you can do that 3 times throughout a match for 1350wp.
This is a best case scenario of course, but landing anywhere above 800wp will get you decent SP gain. Take your time and go through your skills and read the descriptions throughoughly. Do the same with militia gear in the marketplace.
When you're next on join the channel Teamwork 514 and Fury 514 and you'll find many helpful individuals. I will send you some isk when I return from vacation Monday.

SMURF0012 INFECTIOUS wrote: prefer run and gun. and enjoy sniping even though i suck at it.
If you like run and gun you might consider putting points into Biotics (Cardiac Regulators for more run/jump time, Myofibril Stimulants make you jump incredibly high if they're stacked and also make you punch hard I guess, and Kinetic Catylizers increase run speed) and Armor Plates (so you can use Ferroscale, which gives you a mid-tier amount of health with no drawbacks, and Reactive, which gives you low tier amount of health and a small boost to Armor regen, but lowers your speed by a very small [negligible] amount.) Armor Repairers, because having a healthy regen is wonderful, or any of the shield categories, though investing in shields takes a bit more than armor, unfortunately. For run and gun playstyle, you'd probably be best going with Minmatar racial suits, which are basically the runner race. Good for people who like being quick and hard to hit, and they have the potential to be tanky. You'll want either Assault or Scout, but be warned that MinScout has basically no HP at all. Being tapped by anything will floor you if you aren't tanking it.
In addition to the above suggestions, remember that it's also very important to put levels into your Dropsuit Engineering and Dropsuit Electronics because that's where you get pretty much all of your CPU/PG so you can equip anything decent. Don't worry about leveling them up to start out with, as they are very expensive SP-wise. But just remember that you will need those later on.
As for weapons, assuming you go Minmatar, you'll probably want an Assault Combat Rifle unless your trigger finger and aim are both pretty good, in which case the regular Combat Rifle is more powerful, but you have to tap R1 for each shot. Personally, though others will likely suggest something better, I like having an Assault Combat Rifle and a Scrambler Pistol. If you can get a headshot in with the scrambler pistol (laser weapons are the shield killer weapons) or can get the drop on them, shields will be down and you can swap to your combat rifle, which is stronger against armor, and blap them before they've turned around.
Another very important note that applies to pretty much everyone. Keep moving. At no point should you be standing still. Running across an open field? Strafe as you run, occasionally break sprint and then start up again. It'll help throw off snipers. Assume there's one out there, and assume they may be looking at you. And if you know for certain a sniper is training on you, jump occasionally. Bunny hops are annoying as **** to hit, especially the headshot they want so bad. Are you hacking an objective or installation? Wiggle back and forth and squirm in a circle. If someone comes up behind you and catches you distracted, holding still just makes it easier to line up a headshot. If you're moving while they're shooting there's less reaction time between the first shot and you turning around or booking it, because you're already set on moving around and so there isn't a panic moment. And then of course the firefight itself. Keep that wiggle up. Circles, back and forth strafe, long strafe, short strafe. If you can throw off your opponent's aim then you can survive longer and you can maybe get them before they get you.
I know it sounds really clunky and weird, but once you've got the hang of it it'll be a lot better.
If you don't mind a monetary invest or already have one, a headset is great to have so that you can hear people walking up on you, the charge of a nova knife, the sound of a scout decloaking, etc. Headsets are amazing to have in this game.
And then I had some other things to say but I've gotten everything completely jumbled and forgotten most of it. Good thing I'm not a teacher.
It's happened once or twice someone couldn't pay the price, and I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals.

All these points are extremely important. Thank you for making a point of them. I personally recommend training all relevant skills to 3, just as you say, and higher if necessary to unlock other relevant skills. I've found that level 3 is the most achievable significant skill level and I can't stress the importance of training EVERYTHING to that level, weapons, CPU/PG, suits, modules, everything. Then level 3 (advanced) suits can be fitted with advanced modules, advanced tank, and advanced weapons, everything matching, including considerations of PG and CPU.
It's easy for a noob to succumb to the temptation to train something they think is important like a weapon, to level 5 only to find they can't fit it on a suit without sacrificing tank, due to limited CPU/PG. Training everything evenly to level 3 in the first instance will keep this sort of thing under control. |

Focus on one role for spending your skill points. Do you want to play as heavy, medium or light? Then what type of suit?
Heavy has commando (two light weapon slots ie Combat Rifle and Mass Driver) and sentinel suits (one heavy weapon slot and one sidearm slot).
Medium has assault (more hp/shield but less equipment slots) and logistics suits (less hp/shield but more equipment alots)
Scout suits a mixed bag depending on race, but they are usually used for stealth objective taking while using weapons like shotguns, nova knives and snipers. They often will be the lowest hp/shield suits around.
Focus on one type of rifle, preferably the one that works with your suit. I see that your avatar is Caldari. Are you planning on using their suits?
Skill points will come easier with time. The more adv. gear you get the easier combat will become and the more equipment you unlock will make it easier to farm SP even in losing games. I'll be on later today and I will send you some isk. |

Outside of spending months of getting shot to hell all day long to gain the skill points necessary to be able to kill one person with a clip instead of shooting the clip into there back then when you reload then turn around you and flick you so you die. Yeah, the playerbase kinda locked in because of all the officer and proto items and gear prior use. I want even sure what officer gear was when I joined. I joined pretty early on, so I had nothing to worry about. But I can definitely see you're problem.
