From what I have played of the closed beta a few things have raised my concern. The first of which is that this game will likely be competing with Planetside 2 and that, many people who have the option of playing either game, will likely choose Planetside. I realise the loreGÇÖs are different (though this will not matter to anybody but the most hardcore eve fans who will likely be playing eve more anyway) and that they are different games for different systems, but, as I said, as it stands from what is known of both games will lead to planetside pulling way ahead for those who have the option of both.
Business model - This is my first, and possibly primary concern. As it is the real money purchases in dust are, without a doubt, better than items which are otherwise accessible through simply playing the game. Planetside developers have stated that real money items in planetside will either be skill acquisition multipliers, cosmetic, or things that will otherwise be available for in-game resources and that they will be avoiding real money items that give a definite advantage.
In dust there are various things purchasable with AUR that simply better than those that are available with isk. If eve is to compete this needs to change. AUR items either need to be cosmetic or things purchasable with isk.
Scale - PC will always win this one of course purely on the nature of consoles however I must admit the Dust maps we have seen are a lot smaller than I was expecting. Not in terms of the map itself (though they are smaller than I was expecting) but the amount of players per map is definitely something that I found underwhelming.
Deployment - This may seem like a silly one but it adds to the atmosphere. In Planetside 2 players actually deploy in drop pods can kill people they land on etc. This would be nice to see in Dust. That being said I've always looked at that NCC and though how disappointing it was that the NCC is simply an environmental representation of a timer. It would be nice if the NCC was actually modeled internally and the attacking side spawned inside the NCC in a clone facility then deployed via drop pod (for a single player without the deceleration unit seen in one the fanfest gameplay videos), Vehicles (which are then carried down by npc drop ships from the NCC), player controlled personnel drop ships, or simply jumping out of the vehicle bay and using previously said deceleration unit. Obviously with some form of force field over the landing bay to stop enemy simply sawn camping. Also the ability to man some guns on the NCC to attack various targets and the NCC taking damage from surface turrets would be nice. (Not sure if they already do but though the hit seems to be registered by the crosshair the thing has too much hp to be able to tell if you are doing anything to it.)
I am sure I am forgetting things but they don't spring to mind right now. Again I realise they are different games but they are competing games therefore they need to be able to compete, especially with the real money aspect as pay to win puts a lot of true gamers off buying games. |
