If my scan reads 'large margin of error' does that mean that two or more enemies with some dampening have evaded the scan or 1 enemy with a lot of dampening? Thanks. |

It means that there is a scout or two with a profile that your scanner can pick up. It could also be suits that are below what db level you pick up. It could many things but usually a scout has gotten by your scans if it's a small margin of error.

Currently, I have skills into a Gallente Logistics which brings my level of scans down a full level (standard scanners have advanced scan level, advanced scans have proto level and so on). For me, it's been a while since I've seen "Large Margin of Error".
The best scenario I can think is you tried to scan using a Standard Active Scanner (46 dB) while there was a triple dampened Gallente scout in your area of scans (13 dB). This is also the most extreme level of scanning vs. dampening that the game can provide at the moment.
The reason I say "most likely" is because there may have been another scout as well you might not have known about. However, if you take the 46 dB scanner vs. just one 13 dB scout, you will get a Large Margin of Error message.

Also I have a question to ask. What would a 19 db suit protect me from.

This is such a cool game on many levels...Hehehe.
It's interesting to note that, unlike other radar/detecto/inviso equipped shooters, Dust's ewar gear is always functioning and always transmitting data. A deeply cloaked player is always visible to your gun's electronic aim-assist which follows biological radiation instead of dropsuit signature. The warrior with long-range precision scanning is always being betrayed by whatever dampening her suit may have, by the active-energy sent out by the ultra-long scanning she added to her suit---which is unavoidably "telling" the enemy that she's around somewhere. (Hence, never add extra precision to your dampening-bonused suit).
So yes, Agria, the posts here are likely quite correct, but as a result, keep something in mind: Each time your get a reading saying "high margin for error", the dampened scout out there just got a HUD message "scan attempt prevented", telling him someone (YOU) are somewhere near. (and he didn't have to pay 500,000 SP in precision enhancement to detect you)
So the first moment you get that message "high margin for error"-----put that danged scanner away, don't activate it anymore. You've just given your presence away to the scout, arguably more than he's just given his presence away to you....
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Thanks for the replies, I tend to think it was most likely 1 scout with a lot of dampening. I rarely get the large margin of error but thought it would be usefull to know whether I am deeling with two cloacked scouts or 1. I should have noted I was using an Amarr logi with a creodron flux active scanner. |

From my understanding large margin of error means there are several people who evaded your scan. Some margin of error means a couple or just 1 evaded. No margin is a perfect scan.
Whether you scan them or not, if they were in your scanners scan then they know something has a scanner within 200 meters.
While slow to anger and occasionally indecisive, they are also capable of harnessing enormous resolve when truly tested.
