My question is how does one record their games. I need multiple options, and I don't want to buy anything. I use videos to learn things people do in the game, that's how I get better. I want to help others, too.

Combination of different software:
El Gato Game Capture HD (recording) GIMP 2.0 (static images and overlays) Sony Movie Maker 13 (general easy editing) Adobe After Effects (hardcore rendering/graphics) Audacity (audio editing)
EDIT: Windows Movie Editor will work and is free but it has some -major- compression issues and you'll lose a lot of quality. My suggestion is to hash out the $60 or so, get Sony Movie Maker 13, and utilize it's capability for loss-less rendering and ease of use. Just be sure to have a big hard-drive to store everything on.
If you have any questions, hit me up on Skype at 'nomistrav' and I'll answer what I can.

I use Sony Vegas Pro 12 , the most used video editing program in the world because of it's advanced capabilities but also for it's easy to understand layout. Heard it costs 700 $ but you can get it for free by cracking it. Just watch some youtube tutorials that will explain you how to crack it. Been using it for 3 years and I have not had a single complaint using it.

hey dude i use elgato game capture hd, the files can be HUGE on max quality though so beware.
I use Sony Vegas 10 HD pro, really should get the latest one.
I render into .wmv, 1280x720, 256kbps, 44.1khz, 16-bit sound, I also render at double-NTSC so as to not limit the frame rate to 30FPS using PAL rendering, it won't be a constant frame rate but at least you get the peaks as well as the troughs as DUST doesn't run at a constant frame rate...render at 60FPS and you will capture the >30-40fps moments DUST has.
you could use other formats but the best thing to do is see which codecs and containers Youtube recommend.I use two pass rendering, with two-pass on the 2nd sweep, it will add bits and pixels and detail where it missed the first time. it takes twice as long but the result is a clearer image
Here are the settings I use (project and rendering) for Sony Vegas.
VIDEO:
6mbps 720hd CBR (two-pass) windows media video 9 advanced profile WMV11
AUDIO:
Quality VBR Windows Media Audio 9.2 Lossless VBR Quality 100, 44khz 2 channel 16 bit VBR

There's lightworks if you want to get real fancy. I hear it's been used in professional movies and it's also free.

Either way you've got to buy something for recording ps3 gameplay.

Unfortunately, this option simply isn't available to you. Due to the way the PS3 encodes video, you need to have specific equipment like a capture card to record PS3 footage.

Heyo Aeon or anyone using the normal El Gato, is there a way to see in 1080p on your console so that it looks normal but records in 720p in your video????
I try to record on my console but it looks like I'm playing a PS2 game even though I have all the possible resolutions checked off |

This reminds me of ... we should make a chat with all the dust youtubers only , that cold help a lot showcasing , glitches , bugs and potentially helping the CPM too if they need someone to record them testing values. ( Looking at Aeon ) I'll look more into this ... got a few EvE pilots that could moderate it.

Well I have tried more than 5 different video editors.
Best is by far below.
MovAvi Video Suite 14 - $60
Although I just recently got MovAvi I have only created one montage using it and have not uploaded it yet so you cant see its quality until later on today when I put out my Ishokone Assault Forge montage.
But I will say it does everything better than sony all at a fraction of the price, dual rendering pass, any format you want, has a converter, editor, trimmer/ clipper all in one, comes with its own screen capture on your pc, audio editor as well.
I have just made the forge montage in optimal settings highest quality possible from my capture which is 720p60 HD and compared it to sony's and MovAvi takes the cake by a long shot!
Now I use a hauppauge PVR 2 HD gaming pro edition for capturing.
I am able to now record in quality of 14mbps and 60 fps even though files are huge at first MovAvi converts in seconds with its new super speed convert and there is zero quality loss they even guarantee it unlike sony.
I will share my first MovAvi footage for you guys here later on once its uploaded.
I really recommend it, compared to all others, I have tried 5 and sony is the second best the third best was arcsoft showbiz and none else are worth getting, that I have tried anyways.
If you dont want to be jumping around everywhere back and forth get MovAvi everything all in one. With the best quality it knocked sony vegas out of the ball park by a mile..
I was watching my forge montage on my 720p tv today and actually thought I was playing due to such quality in graphics from MovAvi.
Anyways, Just trying to help out. I went through hell and back finding it myself.

I was thinking of making cinematic videos, but it's rediculously hard to do with dust. Casting would be difficult too... And then coordination. I just don't have the time either. I'd love to see something like this attempted tho.

As promised in my above post here is a sample of what MovAvi can do.
And this is just 720p60 HD not even 1080p.
