So I'm tempted to get 1 for my playstation, I'm told it helps load things alot faster I know completely nothing about technology so, if I was to replace current drive with a ssd would that remove all current data on my ps3? I have know clue where stuff gets saved XD. Second question which ssd should I get, looking for a decent one but not stupidly priced (nothing higher than -ú120

Your data are saved on the HDD that you want to replace by a SSD. So obviously you'll "lose" your current data if you take it off to put a SSD instead.
Just use our bestfriend google ^^
Edit : don't buy a recentssd as it wont be fully exploited by the ps3. It shouldn't cost you more than 50Gé¼ (convert this ^^)

You'll need to call all your past partners to tell them you have an SSD. It's the right thing to do.

It depends...
If you have the super-slim ps3 it's a piece of cake...
Buy the proper ssd WITH a bracket, open the case and slide in.... (YouTube helps out on that) (PS3 transfers all data from 12gb ssd to the new one)
For previous editions on PS3 you need to replace the actual harddrive...
My topgear toptip.... Samsung ssd's...
they come with software to transfer all the data from the harddrive to the new one (might require a pc)
Your game data can be dumped on USB-stick...
And like Sequal said.... Google... and YouTube... |

back up to USB then copy it over, I've been told you have to load the firmware onto the SSD from a USB stick? Is this true people? Surely the system files copy over from the HDD or flash memory (in my case I have the super slim 12gb) to the SSD?
I am still waiting for an SSD mounting bracket as I bought the wrong one from Maplin, it's taking forever, I have a cheap-ish sandisk SSD, from what I understand there is no point in going for a fancy SSD as the PS3 cannot take advantage of the full read and write speed, there is a bottleneck at a certain point.

I placed a wd black 750GB (7200rpm), in my ps3... was 59Gé¼...
Quite satisfied about it, lot's of space and fast enough...
PS3 can't keep up with SSD speed due to that bottleneck, that's why i bought a HDD with higher rpm....
Got an original bracket for 10Gé¼....

Yes, all data will be lost but you can take the option to back up to an external hard drive using the PS3 back up utility and then the restore function. This is not the best idea.
You will need a flash drive formatted to fat32 with the .pup file that can be downloaded directly from Sony. This will load the operating system back on to the PS3 so that you can get up and rolling.
Buy the cheapest SSD you can find with the size you feel is best for you. Personally I have no problems at all with my 128gb drive. The PS3 only has a SATA I port on the mother board. This means that even the cheapest SSD is not getting fully utilized by the system.
Make the move now you will not regret it.
Oh and one little tip. Last I heard the PS3UPDATE file downloaded from Sony is still bugged and has to be renamed to PS3UPDATE.PUP before you put it on the usb stick otherwise the system will not recognize it as a bootable file.

Alot of feed back :) So unless I back mu data up ill lose it, gota ya I believe I have a slim playstation, cannot remember but I can take the current drive out the front . You say something about getting one with a bracket, what do you mean? As far as I can tell you unscrew the drive in place and place the new one in and screw it into place then slide it back in . Correct? Also do they all come the same size? I don't mean memory but literally the size I'm meters or centermeters, is there a specific size I need?

Hey i had a SSD in my PS3, and while it did load faster I'm taling like 4 seconds extra in the warbarge and you spawned on about 3 seconds faster. From what I've been told with the writing in PS3 is they write to the hard disk more often than a PC which isnt good on SSDs, itll wear out faster.
All in all the cost benefit was not there, even othwe games did not load much fast enough to justify the cost. It would be better to put it in a PC, or if you want a different hdd you could just get one with larger storage capacity.
Yes all SSD's I've seen in stores are the 2.5 inch drive. (Laptop) |
