In this short guide I will attempt to give new (and old) players my advice on dealing with some of the more frustrating elements of gameplay within Dust 514.
This is NOT a guide for fits, isk generation or skill builds.
Chapter One: Gun Game
There have been many guides written about this. A very concise guide can be found here:
https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=194718&find=unread
Make sure to read everything and thank Ghost Kaiser for a great guide. I have some tips to add after you've read that whole post. First off never engage someone who you can't take. This will vary depending on your fit, but don't expect to be in an Assault or Logi suit and go toe to toe with a Heavy HMG. You will lose. Everytime. Instead try and create distance to pick them off. Same goes for scout suits, if you're fitted for stealth, speed and hacks play to those strengths. Engage targets from behind or with teammates. Most of the time going Rambo will get you killed.
There are enough gun game guides, I just wanted to add my two cents. I really want to emphasize target prioritization. Pay attention to what is killing you. Maybe write the names down of their equipment and look it up after the match. A lot of new players feel like they get "insta-killed" by better weaponry. While it's true, some deaths are so quick you have no time to react before you are on the ground, it is reasonable to understand that player had far better weapons and armor.
It sucks when that happens, but it's justified. If you're in totally starter gear and you try to go toe to toe with someone in an adv. assault suit with adv. weapons, you better pray they have no gun game. Take it slow in Dust, pick a role and get good. Don't be surprised when veteran players melt your face, they've earned that right.
Chapter Two: Redline
This has become an all too common occurrence in Dust 514. This is where you are getting pushed back far enough to where you have either one spawn point outside of your MCC or you are only able to spawn at your MCC. I think there are a couple causes for redline games, some of which are avoidable.
Now, there are games where the team is so well geared and organized, they round up newberries and blueberries like cattle and farm them. But usually this happens because of lack of spawn locations, or the enemy kills your few uplinks and you're all forced to spawn back.
Let's talk about uplinks for a second. At a base level they aren't too impressive but upgrading to the R9 Uplink is not very costly but comes with huge improvements. You can carry 6 uplinks, each can spawn up to 9 players and you can have 2 deployed at any given time. If both uplinks get used up, that's 550WP or in my eyes enough incentive to make sure you properly place your uplinks. The upgraded versions get even better.
Uplink placement is crucial. I watch them get tossed in very careless places, not taking into account that if the enemy storms the point, obvious uplinks will be wiped out. If those are the only uplinks, you're left hoofing it back to the point, often times creating the start of a redline scenario. Proper and creative Uplink placement can stop a redline from ever happening.
Take care in placing your links. Find a fall back point, near your target but far enough away that the enemy will have to hunt for it. Then place another near your target, but again be creative!! Don't just toss down links on the point, as grenades and other AoE will destroy them. Find nooks and crannies or nearby out buildings that provide line of sight to your target. Placing uplinks near your target, but hidden from enemies can make a huge difference in holding a point. I've found many in games I am the only one throwing down uplinks, yes farming many WPs in the process, but also making sure my team never is far from the point. I don't know how those games would have gone without my uplinks, but I can't assume it'd go well.
Take a moment to explore around before dropping your uplinks. It could make the difference between a redline game and a great back and forth.
Chapter Three: Mass Drivers, Jump Mods and You
This is a topic of recent discussion. One of which I'm sure new players have encountered and it's left them shaking their heads wondering what just happened. Here's how to understand and hopefully counter these players.
The Mass Driver or MD is essentially a grenade launcher. Militia versions are not very strong, while proto and adv. versions can essentially 1 or 2 shot weaker suits. A favored combo is to take jump mods and a heavy suit, then proceed to moon jump around in combat spinning and raining MD rounds down. For new players in starter fits, this can be extremely frustrating as it seems as if there's nothing you can do.
Short of any hard counter, AWARENESS is your best weapon. These players revel in getting into thick combat. Confusion helps their tactic while clumping up blueberries allows the MD to get multiple kills. If you encounter one of these players, note the name. Watch for their deaths and the direction from which the enemy team is spawning from.
When this player is in your area, immediately disengage and get between 20m-50m away and try to pick them off. The apex of their jump and the landing point are where they will be easiest to hit. Track them as best you can while burst firing, full auto will waste ammo/heat up and also draw attention to yourself. It takes practice to hit targets in the air, but at least you're not getting killed before having a chance.
Always keep note of when they die and where they come from, if you can anticipate their movements and always have yourself set up at a distance, you'll provide much needed assistance to teammates caught up under his jumps. Remember AWARENESS is your greatest ally here, after that it's up to your gun game.

Nice stuff!
It's good to see a helpful post from a new player's perspective. While I, as an older player, know a lot about the game, the more experienced/richer/higher SP players don't really suffer from the same problems that fresh players do. I know there were a couple of things in here that I just sort of assumed newbies would know, but having read this I realise that they wouldn't.

Your guide was THE inspiration for me to write this. I see many posts in general discussion each day that are frustrated rants. Many of which can be solved by adjusting your attitude and tactics.
I will be writing a "How to make your Newberry self Useful" kinda guide. Detailing general combat etiquette, tactics to encourage and also things to avoid. Even in my short time, I've come across new players who are really frustrating to play around. It might be kinda late, but hopefully it can be abridged to fit whatever game we end up getting next from CCP.

This goes both ways! If you are playing with a nanite injector, use it! It's an all too common occurence for a medic to ignore the calls for help and get caught up shooting at some far odd target.
If you die, you can press X and go back to the spawn selection screen to observe where the medic is and if it looks like he will be able to get to you. If it seems unlikely, respawn and don't wait.
If it seems like the medic is working to getting towards you, don't suddenly tap out making his run to you worthless. Even if you're wearing an APEX or some of the free starter fits, don't automatically respawn because its free or cheap. That medic will appreciate the WP gain, some players even rely on it as they only play medic or might only have SP put into that build. |
