Ever been on a leisurely stroll through a socket, then suddenly die unexpectedly to a knife in the back? Chances are you just ran into a Minmatar Scout.
Scouts in most cases, have bonuses set on Electronic Warfare (or EWAR) and are either good a knowing an enemy's position, or hiding their position from the enemy.
The Minmatar Scout, while still benefiting from EWAR, is less oriented on the knowing an enemy's position, but hiding your position and infiltrating the enemy from behind, causing a few casualties and once he's spotted, running away, taking a chance and charging the enemy head on, or die trying.
In this guide I will go over a few Minmatar Scout fittings, the benefits and the drawbacks of each one, and also how to use the Minmatar Scout to the maximum efficiency.
Skills needed in order to have a successful Minmatar Scout career Step 1, make sure you have these essential core skills -Shields Upgrades 5 (25% boost to shields) -Armor Upgrades 5 (25% boost to armor) -Shield Extension 5 (Complex Shield Extenders are a must) -Core upgrades 5 (Extra 5% space to fit mods and weapons) -Engineering 5 (25% more Powergrid) -Electronics 5 (25% more CPU) -Profile Dampening 5 -Precision Enhancing 5 -Range Extension 5 -Cloak Field 3 (You will not need a proto cloak) -Drop Uplinks 5 -Systems Hacking 5 (With this and the Minmatar Scout skill at 5 you will have a 50% bonus to hack speed without codebreakers. With codebreakers, you will be the god of speed hacking.)
Once you got these you're set! Now on to the skills necessary for your suit and weapons
Step 2, level up Minmatar Scout skill to level 5.
The Minmatar Scout skill at level 5 an additional 25% damage for your nova knives, an extra 25% hacking speed, in addition to a 75% PG/CPU reduction to your cloak field
Step 3, weapon skills -Sidearm Operation 5 (15% less CPU usage) -Nova Knives Operation 5 (25% less charge up time) -Nova Knives Proficiency 5 (15% more damage to armor and shields) -Nova Knives Fitting Optimization 5 (25% less PG usage) -Bolt Pistol Operation 5 (25% less kick) -Bolt Pistol Reload Speed 5 (15% reduction to reload time) -Bolt Pistol Ammo Capacity 5 (25% more ammo) -Bolt Pistol Proficiency 5 (15% more damage to armor) -Bolt Pistol Fitting Optimization 5 (25% less PG usage)
You will notice that I use a Bolt Pistol which is a sidearm, instead of a light weapon, this is so that you can have your knives in your primary weapon slot and your Bolt Pistol as a backup for other scouts, medium frame shotgunners, or jumpers.
Now for the part you've all been waiting for, the fittings.
The Runner For this role you want two fittings. This role is used at the start of a match to get to a city objective quickly and drop links so your heavies and assaults can spawn in assist you.
1. For distances less than 300 meters
Highs: Best shields you can fit Lows: 3 complex kincats Primary weapon: Ishukone Nova Knives Sidearm: Bolt Pistol Equipment: Imperial Viziam Drop Uplink, Best cloak field you can fit, if any
2. For distances more than 300 meters
Highs: Best shields you can fit Lows: 1 Complex cardiac regulator, 2 Complex Kincats Primary weapon: Ishukone Nova Knives Sidearm: Best bolt pistol you can fit Equipment: Imperial Viziam Drop Uplink, Best cloak field you can fit
The Jumper Used as a troll suit, and also as an uplink clearer and an uplink placer. This suit will allow you to one shot most starter fits, two shot assaults and logis, and two-three shot sentinels. However you will have very low health so never use this in a direct engagement.
Highs: 3 Complex Myos Lows: 1 Complex Cardiac Regulator, 2 Complex Kincats Primary Weapon: Ishukone Nova Knives Sidearm: Bolt Pistol Equipment: Best cloak field you can fit, Viziam Flux Drop Uplinks
Speed Hacker supreme Hacks in about 3 seconds. Use this to hit points that enemies neglect to watch, and also to re hack points taken by the enemy in record time. Especially useful when an enemy is occupied fighting your team on a point and you swoop down and hack it while they are distracted.
Highs: Best shields you can fit Lows: 3 Complex Codebreakers Primary Weapon: Ishukone Nova Knives Sidearm: Bolt Pistol Equipment: Cloak field
Your generic assassin This is your all around suit, stealthy, good shields (But still not enough to be useful in a direct confrontation), and good speed. Flank an enemy, rejoice at the "SCAN ATTEMPT PREVENTED", and take care of your enemies, quickly and efficiently. You want to have at least 3 different fittings for this suit.
1. For proto Gal logis Highs: Best shields you can fit Lows: 2 Complex Profile dampeners, 1 Complex Kincat WILL EDIT LATER

Several things. Try to include rookie friendly things. For starters, a beginning min scout would not need fitting optimization 5, proficiency 5, links 5, cloaks 3, hacking 5, and sidearm op 5. These could be obtained later when the min scout is ready to do so, at at least 20m sp. Make this guide geared towards new players, helping them if they want to choose this as their playstyle. Unless of course you wanted this to be help for general players. Also, give them the freedom to use whatever weapon. Also, Complex Shields are not a must. On a ganked suit like a min scout, enhanced shields are fine for the small boost that complex gives. Cloaks can be given a guide of their own or a section of their own on how to use them effectively.
I'd be glad to help you if you'd like. Some starter fits I have are:
Scout M1
ZN-28 Nova Knives Submachine Gun
Basic Shield Extender x2 Advanced Precision Enhancer x1
Advanced Profile Dampner x2 Basic Kinetic Catalyzer x1
Equipment wise a min scout doesn't need much of anything at all. Everything is completely optional and up to the user's playstyle. I don't recommend cloak until Min Scout lvl 4 at the least, and even then use it with caution or don't at all. The decloak animation can get a lot of people.
That's all :)

ZN-28's are the first thing a beginning scout should skill into The next thing you should skill into would definitely have to be Scrambler Pistols as the Minja fit works really well in Pubs Next skill into either Assault Rifles or Sub-Machine Guns as they are a must for min scouts because knifing can only get you so far. Also quick knifing tip don't hold down the trigger unless the target is alone as pressing it is more effective.
Also for beginners I recommend skilling into adv and proto basic scout suits before you skill into min scouts as its cheaper and it allows you to equip cloak fields as soon as possible as they take a **** load of pg and cpu. Also If you can get a bpo, LP APEX, or APEX Tiger as soon as possible as it really helps you win in battle and you can eventually have full proto running on it. I can personally vouch for the APEX Tiger in fact I use my Tiger as one of my Slayer Scout fits.

Last I checked, basic light frames don't get the cloak fitting bonus. Did they change things?

I strongly advise against skilling light frames due to the fact they have no bonuses the min scout really needs. All it has is a fast move speed. I also would say that any gun is up to the user, but sidearms make it more cost effective and fitting effective, and light weapons are more powerful but cost more and take up more fitting space that could be used for kincats and other fitting intensive items. Also, like I said, cloaks are not necessary, and for beginners will most likely hinder their performance more than assist it. Another tip is to jump shot. It has the same speed or similar speed and allows you to charge at the same time. A BPO scout would also be nice to play with yes, but beginners should probably focus more on saving isk because min scouts are extremely costly and you can die quickly in them.

Hey, I have been running Minmatar Scouts for about two years. I have a few points I would like to make, and maybe share some strategy with you. These are guidelines that I use with great effectiveness, but you can make it your own. I play to the suits strengths.
First of all, lets talk about Skills. We are talking about SCOUT suits, not LIGHT suits. The difference is based on the skill category. Scout suits receive bonuses to hacking speed, and knife usage per Minmatar Scout Dropsuit level. They are also the fastest moving scout suit based on its stats. Don't waste skill points bringing the racial light suit to level 5, there is no benefit to it added to Racial Scouts from its parent in the tree. That being said, make sure your core upgrades are all 5'd, as well as Dropout Electronics and Engineering. This will guarantee that you will be able to fit everything needed to do the job. the Skills I have just to run Minmatar Scout suits are the following
Dropsuit Command 1 >Minmatar Light dropsuit 3 >>Minmatar Scout dropsuit 5
Dropout Upgrades 4 (you receive no bonuses beyond unlocking the following branches no point in dumping SP into level5) >>Armor 5 >>Biotics 5 >>Core 5 >>>Electronics 5 >>>Engineering 5 >>Shield 5
Secondly, you need to determine what the role of the Minmatar Scout is. Its Scout suit bonuses imply it is designed for infiltration and hacking (pg/cpu cost decrease on cloaking devices, and 5%bonus per level for hack speed), and GOD DAMN does it do well at that. But what skills benefit this role? Hacking Speed, Cloaking Devices, and of course Kinetic Catalyzation, Hand to Hand, Precision Enhancement, Profile Dampening, and Range Amplification. Now many of these skills you are taking just for the passive boosts. Specifically the Profile, Precision, and Range Skills. But You are going to for sure use Cloaks, Codebreakers, Kin Kats, and Myofibrils.
I am sure you have noticed that I have not included any fitted tanking skills. I do this for a reason. Armor and Shield mods take up valuable fitting slots. you have 3 Highs, 3 lows, and 2 equipment slots beyond your light and sidearm. You are going to have to forget everything you know about combat in Dust, because the scout game is different. Your armor is your ability to stay hidden, your shield is your speed. Your Cloak and movement speed are what will keep you alive while capturing objectives, and installations. It will also allow you to get the drop on enemies. If you take any skills make sure they give you a passive boost to your shields or armor, after the shield and armor upgrade skills i believe there are no passive bonuses. If memory serves correctly the skills increase module performance (this is active bonus).
The Minmatar scout's weapon of choice is of course the Nova Knife. But you don't need to always be using proto's or officers to kill people. Your role on the battlefield is more important than your ability to kill. Have your knife skills 5'd for damage boosts and fitting requirement bonuses, but that by no means obligates you to use only protos. I have more kills with basic knives, than I do with my prototypes. Your weapon load out is always the last thing you are going to fit to your suit when running scouts the way I do, modules that build your battlefield role are way more important than shooters. Another thing to consider is not using a Light Weapon... At all... The reasons for that is they take more PG/CPU than sidearms, and once again, your role doesn't put combat at the primary. Instead i rely on Scrambler pistols, and Knives, and more often than not i forego the use of grenades.
The last thing I want to cover is Fitting your suits. Standard, Advanced, Proto, all will follow the same build order. Cloak > Lows > Highs > Knives > Everything else. I always prioritize Hacking speed to movement, simply because you are typically stationary when you hack. The faster you can get off the hack, the better your chances are at escaping without dying. You will always Always ALWAYS hack while cloaked. I can add more to this if you guys are interested, and I am more than happy to share my fits when i get a chance to. |

XxBlazikenxX, do I have your permission to republish this information in a mail to the Learning Alliance? (With reference to the author included of course.)
Hundredx Nails, same question. Your response provides a balance of perspective, and I would like to send it as a follow-up email.
I never did bother to put together a Scout guide of my own, and I have been having a member asking me for tips about Nova Knife Scouts.
