Tricky one. Imo, run 1 hardener/rep/plate. Once you master 1 hardener, skill up till you can fit a second hardener.

Triple pros:
High resist value, permanent hardened with low skills, virtually immune to singular AV provided you don't get in AV made range.
Cons:
Easily alpha'd with proxies, lack of buffer means multiple AV will cut right through you unless you burn all your hardeners, missile tanks can volley you with a single salvo before you can turn a second hardener on.

No trip hardener. You'll need a really good complex repper if you do that but you won't be able to take a good hit without armor unless the gardeners are all on. |

Nah, rep tank is where it's at. ~340 hp/s without resists (~560 ehp/s with hardener). Even rail tanks have trouble killing it (especially with the OP nitro on an armor tank).

Dual damage modded particle cannons cut right through dual rep fits. You will be dead before the second hardener turns on. They are strong against unorganized random, but horrible against a AV who know what they are doing, and can be deleted by proxies very easily, even with both hardeners up.

Did the math on this a while back. Tested a triple hardener, duel plate hard rep, and duel hard rep plate.
Duel hard rep plate is the absolute strongest defensive tank against another railer.

I don't have a lot of skill into tanks yet, nor do I run them that often. That said I will say triple hardeners works great if your not trying to slay. Triple hardeners and a nitro make one pretty unbillable tank as long as you don't stay still and avoid easy patterns that make you run into proxies. It puts tanks back into the old role of being a distraction to draw out AV fits so that your team can kill them.
That said I hate using fits with a lot of active modules. Constantly turning stuff on all the time when your trying to drive and shoot is annoying. Why I am kind of glad when they finally made armor reps passive. Before that it made armor tanking really annoying and was probably the main reason shield tanks used to be the flavor of the week.
