I watched this video about New Player Experience with video games and it mentioned the "noob toob" (undermounted grenade launcher) in Modern Warfare and how that served as a means to give new players a chance against veteran players.
I was thinking it might be a good idea to introduce something similar but not so scrubby into this game. My idea is to introduce mortar strikes. My idea is to allow anybody in a match, whether they are running solo or in a squad, to call in a single mortar strike for every 500 WPs they earn in a match. The mortar strike will be called in the same way you would call in a warbarge strike but with a 5 second delay from the time you chose the "strike location" to the moment the mortar lands. The mortar will destroy everything within a ten meter radius of where it lands.
Where does the mortar come from? It comes from the Warbarge that everyone has now. This CAN NOT be a Warbarge Subsystem that requires upgrading to use. The idea is to give new players the belief and opportunity to kill proto stompers without thinking they have to spend actual money to make that possible.
What do you people think about this? |

At this point, any kind of indirect fire option would be a boon.

You will not have to be in a squad to be able to use them plus they are more easily and realistically attainable for new players. |

You can start a squad by yourself and lock it and gain access to orbitals.
Besides, the last thing we want to do is further encourage players to run solo.

People are going to run solo no matter what; you need to accept that. Besides even if you put four newberries in a squad together they still will not stand a chance against a squad of proto veterans. Bless their hearts if they are even able to gain enough WPs to call in an Orbital Strike. |

All I see is the glistening tear of joy that rolls down a newberries cheek after he/she wipes out an entire FireTeam of Carne Con Papas in an Ambush match by blowing them to hell.
Think of the little guy. Let's put a hold on buffing weapons (Assault Rifle excluded) and let's buff the little guy. The newberry is UP. |

What makes you think new players running solo are even going to hit 500wp? They're lucky to hit 150. Plus they don't know how to call in off map support.
This game need a NPE that explains things to them, not something that can, and will, be used by veteran squads to blow the newberries to hell en mass every 30 seconds.

I have come across several newberries running solo who were perfectly capable of hitting 500 WPs. For those who can't they can squad up to use the added force to help them get 500 WPs.
I do agree that this game needs a NPE that explains things to them but I feel that no matter how much explanation you provide most newberries they will simply quit the game the moment they feel that trying to do well in a match is hopeless. We have a problem now with people quitting matches the moment they see they are up against competition. People who know the ins-and-outs of this game run off and quit instead of dealing with a possible ass whippin. If veterans are quitting matches why would you expect newberries with no real investment into this game and who consistently get beat down to continue to play this game?

And a mortar strike for 500wp is going make them stick around? They're more likely to end up getting shelled, constantly, while trying to spawn in the redline. A squad with 3 reptools on the lead during a mortar strike only needs 3 kills to get another strike. Newberries aren't going to stick around if that happens.

EDIT: I'm all for helping Newberries adjust to the game, but a Mortar strike isn't the way IMO.

The whole point of this game is Teamwork, you add this then you are just encouraging more solo playing, now if you are thinking of adding like an indirect Mortar weapon in the game that would be pretty cool, other than that don't suggest anymore soloing crap.

People's perspective on teamwork and running solo or completely screwed up. To think you can't work with or benefit the team you are assigned to simply because you are running solo is absurd.
As for an Indirect Mortar Weapon describe what you mean. The mortar strike I am talking about is called in using the same menu you would call in a Warbarge Strike. Once you select a strike location a mortar would be fired and would take 5 seconds to reach the strike location. It will not be too easy to kill redberries who are moving around because of the 5 second delay but it will definitely help newberries deal with people camping on roof tops and above objectives. It can even be used to take out redline tankers so long as you can identify the tank on the map. |

At this point we are basically talking about ideas that circulated for the Gallente Heavy Weapon. Damn we still need racial parity in weapons, let alone vehicles.

500 might be a bit too low. I feel like it should do more damage than a Core Locus Grenade. |
