Is there a way the players can donate directly to CCP if they so wanted to?

Not to bad of an idea but it should happen AFTER we see them actually strive to make dust fun again. They are dormant right now.

I am not sure they have any accounting set up for donations. I suppose if you really wanted to send them a message you could get on Eve and buy a bunch of PLEX and contract them to a GM or something with a note in it. I think that would send a pretty strong message even though it would probably be a message that got them laughing.

Just buy something with AUR. If you can't decide what to buy then buy 10 encrypted keys to open some boxes later or something.

Because it feels like a donation no matter what.
Because people want to get CCP to grow without directly supporting the path which Dust is currently on.

I can't believe people would actually want to give more money, with no tangible results, to a company that took their money and showed very minimal results in the first place.....

I think OP is looking to encourage CCP without encouraging the current choices to send a direct message. I for one can agree with him if that is the case.
I think CCP really should follow SCs lead and open a kick starter for Legion on PS4. This would be far better than their convertible bond sales which funded Dust. Unfortunately I am not sure CCP management has the ability to keep a project together with such a standard of progression and quality.
I for one would toss in a couple hundred bucks directly to a kickstarter assuming certain standards were met that mean I am not going to get totally boned for everything I have spent on Dust.

The idea is a noble one, but let's face it, CCP doesn't want to take responsibility for anything. The second they accept Kickstarter money is the second they owe us information about our investment; that is not acceptable Silence is CCP's greatest defense against us.
Also, I fixed a part of your OP for you No worries, happy to help.

You got that exactly right. CCP grew up with Eve Online and zero competition meaning they were able to screw up and do whatever they wanted without the worry of losing people to competition. Maybe in another 12 years they will have learned that that is not how the real world works but I would not bet on it.
EDIT:
HAHA found your edit in there. I left out PC because a kickstarter would not be needed thanks to the thousands of Eve players who would be on there spending money on day 1 of release.

Hmm......somewhere in a cave right now. All the devs for dust are napping on a huge fur rug in a nice warm pile.there's a warm fire,a qaufe dispenser, plenty of pillows and ribbons.
And then in the basement of a remote building located somewhere in the southern pole, the slightly plasma charred toaster that is the dust server quietly putters away, the hamster running the wheel that powers it brought back to life by logibros demonical ritual involving body parts scavenged from the battlefields and a slighlty broken nanite injector. Scotty the matchmaking AI is actually a lizard gerbil hybrid with 8 tentacles with hands on the end quietly sorting matches with name in the hat system,it pulls a name and assigns a team.
The entire setup looks dusty, and sketchy, since the caretaker is actually the market vendor agent whose name I completely forgot is actually a just a sentient microwave oven(ask logibro how he made it happen) that can't even move, but can only make farting noises and leak a suspicious fluid which tastes and looks oddly like qaufe.
Buy aurum today.
