Yep, still banging the drum about this. I swear I'm going to just keep standing for CPM till I get what I want..
I realise however that you lovely Merc's out there might have ideas too about these subjects.
Now at this point it should be noted that I'm fully aware that most of this stuff should take a back seat to getting the second to second game play in the game up to scratch. UI is not the sexy big brother of shiny weapons that work as they should but it is still important and it's something of a mission with me.
It's also the backbone of the social interaction in the game. The original poor design of the audio voice chat options being a prime example of a hindrance in the game that prevented a lot of players even speaking to each other. I still for instance, have to send a 101 email about how to set up the voice comms in the game to my new starters.
I should also make a little proviso about most of the discussion that will likely happen in this thread.
Most of what is to be discussed here isn't likely to make it to the game. Elements of it might but as any games designer will tell you, UI is a swine to get right and program well. Just look at Eve, they still haven't got the Corp UI right after 12 years. So a great deal of this is likely to be viewed as wish fulfilment from the more cynical of you out there.
But I'm an optimist and I like to look at the possibilities that could present themselves to us should Dust get ported to a more powerful platform. And having some good ideas ready for that glorious moment should CCP finally say YES would put us in a lead straight from the blocks.
Now this is something that I wrote and sent to the original Executive Producer of the game, a long time ago and before the previous team in Shanghai came to be. I believe firmly that the main thing that is missing from the NPE is the context. New players need to know how one mechanic can change another and what we have now doesn't still do that fully. There have been improvements since I wrote that essay, some of them I've even had some input on but there are things that can be done better.
The addition of some Lore into the game for instance during loading screens will help give the players an understanding of what is going on in the world of New Eden. An example of this can be found in my own forum signature. Pages 7 to 11 of D-UNI Unclassified detail a brief overview of the four main Races in New Eden and a timeline with the history of New Eden. It's information like this that creates a common bond between the CCP Games set in New Eden without the Dev intensive work of building on the game play link making the players feel part of a bigger canvas. Perhaps even later adding some detailing of Valkyrie and Gunjack to deepen that sense of immersion.
Now getting deeper into the mechanics of the game itself, features such as Corp Mail and Roles are a great help to running a group of players in Dust but when your corp gets to about 50 or more players then the tools that allow you do run your corp are not up to par and players like me have to use the Eve client. For instance, in Eve I can see the full employment history of every merc in the game by simply searching their name. When the Character was created, the Corporations they've been in. I can then click on anyone of those Corps and discover which alliance they're part off, when they were founded, who by and who the Current CEO is.
All of that information, all that history if you will is actually in the metadata for YOUR Merc right now. But in Dust, you don't see it. Using my Eve client, I could grant a ranking system to my members, award them medals even give them a Title. But it would a waste of time doing so because you couldn't see it in Dust. This is I'm afraid one of the many instances of poor planning and design that the original team are responsible for. Not all of them I should add by the way but circumstance was not their friend at the time.
So the idea of a port, not matter if its known to be coming or an announcement made, excites me as to what can finally be put in the game that should have have been there from day one.
So now to open up the discussion to you guys and girls.
Is there something that bugs you about the experience of the game when not in combat? What can be done better and smarter to help new players and the Vets? What do you think should be in a port? What could be done to help app makers? I'd like your input on this so I can make sure that the Shanghai team get to hear and read about it.
Many thanks. o7

One of the things I'd like to see is the development of a corps capabilities being increased by the actions of its members, like a cross between the CP and a Corp Warbarge. The CEO or a director using CP to improve a Corp Warbarge to allow for a shared Corp Fittings screen to happen, or a percentage boost for players in the SP they get at the end of a match.
I wouldn't want such bonuses to be passive (we had enough of that kak with PC 1.0) but be rather a joint effort between the members of a corp.

Good points from all so far. Keep it up.
At work at the moment but I'm keeping an eye of the thread obviously.
Got some ideas based on feedback.

Interesting Nothi. Could be worth exploring but it's likely a 'if we get a port' type idea.

Warbarge Orbital SPAM and EVE Orbital Strike notification need be be two different Notifications. Eve Timer at District Beacons don't work anymore 3 minute timer in videos. Please fix and or give a count down for squadleaders/All Dust mercs as to when next Orbital Bombardment from a Eve ship is Ready. Sometimes no one looks up to see the Blue ship in the sky
Nice idea.

Could be explained as no clone units in the System but Drones Where deployed that are remotely controlled by Enemy Team as the ultimate AI.Like the current war on terror.
There are currently a number of tech issues regarding AI so again this is potential 'port required' territory.

el OPERATOR wrote:*cough* el OPERATOR wrote:There should be no Corporate interface capabilities EVEside that aren't available DUSTside, period. As well as no Corporate Roles settings available EVEside (except for a CEO) for the DUSTside of the corp. A corp should be one entity, yes, but the two branches mechanically should be separate and independent, except for CEOs who have their identical ID on both sides. EVEside directors being capable of manipulating DUSTside roles/corporate elements should not occur, especially while DUSTside role-holders are completely impotent at affecting EVEside role-holders. Managerially and Organizationally this facet of the game is game-breaking fundamentally.
*cough*
And your idea is very nice too.
