Last night I had two IRL close friends finally hop on dust with me after they both had horrible experiences in the past. They both hopped on at the same time and sent me a message to invite them. One friend had accrued about 15 mill for a total of 20 something mill Lifetime so, the other had deleted his old character and had to make a brand account. Our first match was skirm. First 5 minutes were rocky and we fell far behind but with a lot of effort we won! Second match they felt good about the win. They saw the difference between the game then and now and were digging it.
We had our strategy how we were spawning in for the next match they were positive they could do better this next match. I'd hope we run into an even match by the grace of Scotty. No. My whole team just got tore to pieces. By what other than all proto and officer gear. I went first place with 1/7(uplinks and hacks) and the rest of the team wasn't any better. My friends were running starter fits because they wanted to EARN their way into this game by making isk by them selves. Trust me I pleaded to give them Isk to level up skills but both didn't want it and also wanted to get a feel for the game before spending time deciding what roles they wanted to go into.
After the match I explained the situation on why we may had been placed in that match and why the others were using such powerful gear. I saw some players I had not seen in a match in a while and just said they probably don't get on a lot and just wanted to have fun. Proto is fun, officer gear is fun. I get. But it's not healthy at this phase of the game. When we have so many new players trying to learn. Anyway.
They weren't as discouraged as I thought and they wanted to try DOMINATION. I just thought to my head this is it. After this they won't pick up this game again. But BY THE GRACE OF SCOTTY. The great AI matchmaker gave them a break and it was a VERY even matched game. We won by a good amount. They did a lot better than their first game and unlike the second match actually got decent amount of kills for it being their third game. They dug it. By then we were a little inebriated. They decided to go play GTAV so I went along.
Good job Scotty. ILY.

IMHO the primary barrier for new players, is that they only get two or three rounds in the academy, they they are thrown in the deep end against 50+ million SP players, and repeatedly ripped apart. That is in no way fun or enjoyable. A little resistance, and a few hard rounds can be interesting, but never getting the feet under you, trying to even play is not fun at all, and that is the ultimately reason why we play games.
I'd love to see the statistics. How many new toons added over the past 3 months, are still active after one?
Use the sec status. In eve, new player are "safe" in highsec, of course the nature of an FPS is not exactly safety, but at least use that sec status to filter for SP and WP, so only new toons enter in 1.0's and you'll need 10+ million SP for < 0.5 sec status locations. (in Pubs) Also limit gear by sec status. Just as certain ships can't enter high sec in EVE, certain gear should be barred in the highest sec matches. 1.0: no gear above STD, no HAV/LAV/DS above Militia. 0.8 & 0.9: no gear above ADV, and no LAV/HAV/DS above STD 0.6 & 0.7: no gear above PRO, and no LAV/HAV/DS above ADV 0.0-0.5: No limits. |

CCP, should by now, understand the nature of games. They're either fun or players don't play them.
If getting stomped prevents the fun then players won't play.
There is a lot of fun in DUST. A lot. And getting stomped sometimes isn't enough to overcome the fun.
But getting stomped too much is just enough to prevent players continuing with the game.
You don't have to prevent the stomp but you must reduce it enough to allow players to continue having fun.
CCP, you knew this right? |

I know some of you will say that this is a competitive shooter and if they want fun "go play cod" but it's only fun if you are either skilled or have been playing this game since the beginning Oooor you spend bukus of money for boosters... if you have neither then it's very hard to get into this game.

I was remarking just recently that DUST is, at this time, more balanced & fun than it has ever been. The very fact that we all DEBATE and disagree endlessly about which build, weapon, tactic, etc. is best represents this state. They say a bitching sailor is a happy sailor.
But I remember more clearly than, it would seem, a lot of clones - just how much we've bitched and moaned in the past (quite justifiably - every time ;), about everything. They could probably data mine the archived forums for negative density vs. current relative to population.
How ironic that it feels, as far as they've brought us - that we still can't escape the painful and damaging information blackouts that CCP is infamous for. |
